The SMU link on scores says "SAT/ACT Reporting procedures changed this year (2009)." Not sure what procedures changed. I know a kid that got a low 1300s SAT but a 32 ACT. The 32 got him a lot more traction. If he had decided to go to SMU, would the school convert his 32 to a 1400ish SAT and count him twice?

Did SMU start taking the common application in 2010 or so? The year with the big applications uptick? The yield has dropped quite a bit but the U is surely getting a lot more apps from high quality students with options. Students are also applying to more schools to get into a good one.

Why are fewer people taking, or reporting, the SAT?

Sorry but according the admissions website if you submit both an SAT and ACT the deciding factor will be the higher of the two. Which leads me to believe that for SAT average rates they convert all ACT to SAT scores.

Is there any school that reports their incoming class as an average ACT score rather than SAT?

Oberlin lists ACT first (29-33) but also SAT (1310-1500 mid-50%).

Friar you are wrong sir. So few take the sat now that posting that is close to meaningless. Check out any website, there are conversions tables for act to sat scores and SMU and all others use them. It looks better since students from high achieving high schools generally do better on the act, so converting those scores to SAT makes SMU look better.

I believe they convert them for evaluation purposes but not for reporting purposes.

Why do "students from high achieving high schools generally do better on the act"? Better than SAT conversion tables would project? Stronger well rounded curriculum vs. ninth or tenth grade math on the SAT?
