SMU has 14 recruits rated 5.4 or higher on Rivals and as mentioned above MOST of those would in fact be 3 stars under the Rivals system in effect during the early June Jones era. I mentioned at the time that Rivals inflated their grades so that 2/3rds of the class were 3 stars-278 3 stars or above in those years. Presently there are only 143 recruits rated 3 star or above. They haven't even gone through their inevitable upgrading process. Quit bitchin. You don't understand what you are looking at

How do these numbers compare to our conference mates?

Let's see how this plays out. Stallion could answer this better than me, but my gut tells me PB's 1st real recruiting class (much like this one is for CM) will be every bit as good as CM's if you are simply judging it by quality offers. And like CM, PB inherited a pretty bad team (if I recall correctly, not 1 player PB inherited ever played for an SMU team had ended the season with a winning record).

Given the obstructions in place at the time, that is a real credit to Phil Bennett as a recruiter. Unfortunately he could not sustain the momentum and the rest is history; hopefully one our current AD understands.

Lack of fan support at Ford contributed to this slow down in momentum. I hope our AD understands this as well.

From an offer prospective I believe these recruits have more P5 and FBS offers than JJ's classes. I think one class JJ had about 9 players with no offers at all.

In JJ's last full class (2014) 10 of the 21 who signed had no other D1 offers. Only four had a P5 offer(s) - Sutton, Gresham, Walker and Wyatt.

Morris inherited 16 players with P5 offers. We have 9 in this class already.

Some of you are such [deleted] clowns. Looking at stars alone is for lazy people who don't bother to watch film or even bother to click on the offer list. This class is shaping up to be, BY FAR, the best and most athletic post DP class, period.

Also one of the most important things is where these guys are currently playing - all Texas and almost all big time programs. That is going to really help us down the road - plus i am 100% sure CM is getting good background info from the coaches - which JJ never got. Stuff like - "this guy is a great athlete so if you are going to take a chance take it on him"

The best thing about chad's rep with high school coaches will be seen in a year when some of the top guys want to transfer home. We will be the perfect spot for those guys - and you only need one or two a year to really move the needle. Even June benefited from that with no network at all locally.

Stallion's optimism is all I need to know CM is doing amazing things, but we can't pan the last two coaches based on offers and diamond in the rough recruiting and then not judge CM by the same standard.

I don't see any DITRs yet in this class. Mostly guys who are mid-tier with lots of upside and potential, which is a huge upgrade.

I know that it's early and I know that stars don't paint you the whole picture but our average rating of 2.18 stars is 26th lowest in the country. That should provide some sort of indication.

I didn't think I had to spell this out but I guess I do for some people - DO NOT LOOK AT THE TOTAL SCORE! We already have 17 commits (only 7 schools in the nation have more commits than we do currently). The volume obviously inflates that figure.

Anyways, moving away from stars, let's compare our commits with those of our conference mates' based on # of offers.

Stallion, you cited earlier that SMU currently has 105 offers (6.18 offers/commit)

I'm too lazy to check every teams' classes but i'll check a few.

Houston has 11 commits with 115 offers (10.45 offers/commit)

USF has 9 commits with 87 offers (9.67 offers/commit)

Cincy has 10 commits with 79 offers (7.9 offers/commit)

UCF has 5 commits with 56 offers (11.2 offers/commit)

Fact is we need to be dominating this conference if we want a shot at P5 and we're not doing that. Sure it may be a good class but we're not killing it on the recruiting front as we should be.

I think it is appropriate to ask if "as we should be" is true or not. Should it be an instant improvement over June or am instant improvement over both June AND conference mates?

We are certainly trending upward in recruiting.

We all would like instant gratification, but life usually does not work that way. How anyone could think a never been a head coach with a new staff and coming off 1-11 should be out recruiting everyone in their conference is beyond me. The progress is very easy to see and hopeful will only improve over the next few years.

Stallion has some confirmation bias going on. This is exactly they guy he's been wanting for at least the last twenty years I've been in contact with him in the internet. Custom built Stallion product. He's gonna hate this, but our favorite curmudgeon has turned into a bit of cheerleader.

Having said all of that, last time I looked Scout's got Houston somewhere in the upper 30's, I believe, and then us at the number #50 class in the country. Next is Cincy and then the rest of the conference. Seems to me we're a clear number 2 in the AAC, if Scout has anything to say.

The biggest thing going on here is that Chad and staff are building relationships in a very, very big way. He truly is the anti-JJ. That bodes very, very well for our long term success.

Herman is a first-time head coach and is absolutely wreckin it on the recruiting trail. Sure they had a better season last year than we did but SMU is a way easier sell.
