There's something to be said about the dangers of escalating, knee-jerk outrage. Look at the TCU student, for example. He said something (several things) that were very dumb, and probably pretty offensive to a large segment of people. The response wasn't hey, he needs to recognize that he did something stupid, learn from it, and become a better person -- hell, it wasn't even some form of punishment, like community service or community outreach -- it was he must be expelled from school immediately and have his academic career seriously injured if not destroyed, all for engaging in protected speech.
One can denounce the actions at issue, and still be concerned with how society in this day and age attempts to deal with one "outrage" or another. But hey, it's 2015, there's no place for nuance or subtlety in our society.

Bad attempts at humor, sometimes backfire big time. They deserve sensitivity training, 5 hours of saying the following Mantra, "I will be politically correct in all things", and lastly, be required to wear a diaper for a week to class.
