Hell Mark Richt himself fits the profile of a coordinator hired directly by a national powerhouse

As is the list of hot shot coordinators who have failed in their first HC gig. I just don't see how you fire a guy who went 145-51 and bring in someone who's never been an HC before.

you mean like

Barry Switzer
Jimmie Johnson
Gary Patterson
Grant Teaff
Frank Broyles
Bo Schembechler
Tom Osborne
Les Miles
Bill Snyder
Jimbo Fisher
Dabo Swinney

I could go on and on-simply no truth to that conventional wisdom. Its usually the young fiery guys who are still outworking the competition rather than the older veterans resting on their laurels that you want to hire in College Football

The list of people with head coaching experience who end up failing at a school is long as well. A lot of the coaches that got fired had head coaching experience prior to that job. It's all really a roll of the dice.

Rest of the AAC will be chasing Houston as long as he stays. Amazing job if they are able to keep him at the helm.

Sadly I agree. He inherited a pretty decent program and is obviously a good coach. I think we'll get there but we are a few years behind. We just need to be patient and support the program in the meantime (even if it means suffering through another Memphis game).

At least we can only get better after that.

I'm not sure what you're arguing, because everyone has to start somewhere, but I'm saying, you don't fire a guy who average almost 10 wins a year to get an unproven commodity. But to your list, almost all of them were proven HC's at some level before or were promoted from within.

Switzer, Patterson, Fisher, Swinney, and Osborne were all on staff and got promoted to the HC job. They all knew what they had. Point being if this was Bama replacing Saban with Smart, I'd totally get that. Continuity would be key there.

Miles already previously coached at OSU before he was the HC, who sucked at the time, when he took over there, and the best he did there was 3rd in the Big 12 south.

Johnson went 29-25-3 at OSU before Miami.

Broyles was 5-4 at Mizzou before Arkansas, but really comparing the 1950's to now is pointless.

Bill Snyder is a wizard, and K State is going to have a tough time when he retires. Again, not a premier job.

Teaff coached at McMurry and Angelo state and went 23-35-2 and 19-11 which were both before the D1A split before he went to Baylor. So yeah, that's a technicality.

Schembeckler was at Miami OH first and killed it there before he went to Michigan. So yeah, he got his feet wet before his big job.

Jimmy Johnson and Les Miles had no head coaching experience when they were hired by Oklahoma St though-which were great hirers. If you want to jump below BCS schools-you got Art Briles, Sumlin and Tom Herman all great hires by UH. Mark Richt. The conventional wisdom is nonsense-you don't have to hire a big name veteran head coach even at a powerhouse. In fact, hire youth over older guys and you are more likely to succeed. Oh and let's not forget Bob Stoops at OU or Gundy at OSU-I could literally go on all day. Its youth and hard work in college football

His one bite at the apple. I suspect he regrets his decision. Can't blame him, although he never appeared HC material to me once he got here.

And Guy Morriss was a outstanding head coach before he took the Baylor head coaching job.

Where did I ever say you have to hire old guys? Of course you don't have to. You hire the best coach with the best fit available. For the 4th time, all I"m saying is that when you're Alabama or Florida or Georgia or USC or Michigan or Ohio State, it behooves you to hire someone who is a somewhat proven commodity as a CEO, at some level, because you can. The list of failed hot shot coordinator head coaches is even longer. Some guys just aren't cut out for it and that's fine. If you fire a guy who won 73.9% of his games, hire an unproven coordinator, and he ends up like Will Muschamp, it just makes you look like a clown. And possibly an unemployed clown.

Watching the sideline during the Bennett era, it was absolute chaos - almost like the whole staff was overwhelmed.

The kid in the t-shirt to the right of PB was his starting LT for 3 years.

Now THAT was PB's problem.

Sorry, maybe I should have captioned. This was from our 2014 loss to UNT...so that stellar coach in the picture is June.
