While I agree that more diversity is good for SMU, I think the idea of pushing kids into "Ethnic Studies" majors is moronic. First, they end up with a $250K degree that won't lead to a decent job. Second, the majors tend to isolate minority students from other students.

IMHO - we need more minority kids in getting degrees from Cox, Meadows, the engineering school, and the teaching program.

I don't think that is saying much because if you took out the African Americans on the football and basketball teams of the schools we would drop down just about being at tied with the lowest one.

Shouldn't this be in Around the Hilltop? Wonder how many of the 53 in the incoming class were athletes. Like to see what the numbers look like if you take away those on athletic scholarships. That would give a better indicaton of how good or bad the situation really is imo.

Lets say half are female. Leaving about 27 black males entering this past freshman class.

15 of those 27 are athletes...leaving 12 as "regular" students.

No other 'subpopulation' works like that at SMU.

SMU, like many private D1 football peers, allows the Football and Basketball coaches to recruit 30% of the black males students.

So it sounds like athletics is taking a lead role in helping minorities to have an avenue to top rated education.
