It needs to go to eight and i think it will. Too much money in it to not end up there. Just take a out a non conference game - too many of them anyway.

Eh. The NCAA tourney has buncha teams and 'selection sunday' is a big thing - people talk about it for weeks on end, too.
If they expand to eight and allow more teams in, including the G5, all this conference realignment might stop somewhat. I mean, the money follows relevancy, and by making a G5 team relevant you make G5 conferences relevant. It's worth pointing out you almost never see conference realignment based around basketball; its' all football.

you are touching on the biggest reason it may not go to 8 - the P 5 would be more diluted. Right now it is worth one of them not getting in for it to NOT include anyone other than the P 5 when determining the top four teams. If a non P5 can get in there than that changes some of the reason for a player to feel like they HAVE to go P 5 if they have a chance. It lowers the value of the teams consistently at the bottom of the P5 conferences.

For example - why go to Vanderbilt or Iowa State etc….if the winner of the G5 gets a slot? Much better chances at SMU then at Vandy in that event.

Need to go to 8 teams. That would also give G5 teams a better chance to make it.

You go to 16. The 10 conference champions and the 6 best other teams, seeded by rankings. This year would be:

1. Alabama vs 16. Appalachian State

2. Clemson vs. 15. Western Kentucky

3. Ohio State vs. 14. San Diego State

4. Washington vs. 13. Temple

5. Penn State vs. 12. Western Michigan

6. Michigan vs. 11. Florida State

7. Oklahoma vs. 10. Colorado

8. Wisconsin vs. 9. USC

How much regular season college hoops do you watch? Do you watch all the big matchups knowing they have zero impact on the tourney? Do you tune in to the last few minutes of an upset game?

No. College hoops and football are totally different. The tourney is fun, but the set up of the league isn't great. Rarely does the best team from the whole year win it all

I saw UCLA whip Kentucky in Lexington yesterday. I found it to be a compelling matchup even though it will not determine the NCAA champion.

takes too long to play that many games and 16 would eliminate the bowl games . FCS can do it because they play 11 regular season games and don't have conference championship games. FBS schools are not going to give up that 12th game

I think a 16 team playoff with an 11 game regular season and bowl games as consolation for non-playoff teams would be very enticing to most schools. Many schools schedule an FCS team as their 12th opponent anyway so you eliminate that "exhibition" game that nobody cares about and add a very fun playoff system that everyone would be interested in.

You guys miss the point. 8 is the right number. But when you go to 8 you have now diluted the regular season games to not mean as much and your selection process is boring. Yes we could argue about seeding or who the 6th, 7th and 8th teams in would be but you wouldn't have nearly the drama for tv if you went to 8. As much as we hate it this is about tv ratings and $$$$. This is not about getting a true national champion. Can't dilute the regular season anymore.

Now that said they will eventually go to 8. And they will regret it as college football begins to water itself down much like what college basketball did when they expanded the tourney past 32. In all honestly if you can't make the NCAA tourney semi regularly you absolutely suck.

We don't crown a champion until a month after the season in the current system.
