Waco and Lubbock are as you describe, and so is Stillwater and Fort Worth. As for the Big 10, Ann Arbor is awesome. State College (PA) is awful. West Lafayette (Purdue) is actually a nice town, which surprised me. Evanston (Northwestern) is a great place. Bloomington (Ind.) feels like it should be a great place, but it's not. Stillwater is probably not the best place in the world for sure. Lol. But in recruiting I think people put way too much emphasis on the city that the school is located in rather than other factors. I don’t think Tuscaloosa Alabama is the best place in the world either but they get the best classes year in and year out. I think Jimbo Fischer at aTm has the best class in the country coming in this year and College Station is not Austin. And Baton Rouge is not Dallas lol. Like it or not the city is not something that recruits place the most emphasis on in their decision. Just the cold hard facts.

And those who are surprised that kids pick small college towns over big cities like Dallas could not possibly understand how top recruits are attracted to a place like Clemson, SC.

Funny that people in Dallas say that Fayetteville is beautiful. Also funny that two cities in the same state get such divergent ratings. Guess Starkville is like EMCC from Last Chance U. As regards this data set, there is a very slight negative correlation (corr coefficient: -0.05) in terms of how nice the town is compared to how good the football team is.
Probably have to take long term success (not just 2017) as dependent variable and AD spending and city desirability as potential indep variables.
