Big 12 makes deal

I know Texas is a football first state and that SMU has a long history of playing big time football, albeit mostly in the distant past before television ruled the game...but the question in my mind is whether money would be better invested in trying to make SMU a basketball power? We saw very briefly in the Larry Brown era what can be accomplished pretty quickly and if SMU is going to be relegated to G5 football, why not join Memphis in aiming to build an elite bball program and accept that while we can someday hope to compete with Top 25 football teams, we are not likely to ever sniff a national championship run again. It can be done in hoops...just look at Duke and Gonzaga as evidence that it can be done and Moody can be one of the great snake pits in college bball. I'm certainly not going to hold my breath waiting on that P5 invite and as a guy living on the east coast, I can't say I'm excited about the idea of joining the PAC and having nothing even remotely close to a conference rival.

There's no question that Turner has done very little to help build back an athletics program that might have made SMU attractive to the Big XII. Realistically that was our only hope of being invited to play with the big boys again. He does get credit for Ford Stadium vs Pye's being O.K. with Ownby and at least relaxing some of the recruiting restrictions that Pye put in place but yes, Turner took the easy route and did not aggressively move the improve SMU football and basketball at a time when it was abundantly clear that college sports had changed dramatically with TV networks driving the bus.

Perhaps he thought establishing a nice tailgate environment and having a nice new on campus stadium would significantly boost attendance (from what he saw at Ole Miss) and that the product on the field/court was not as important? As TCU ran off 17 wins in 19 games against SMU and kept getting invited to move up, he was several steps too late in everything SMU needed to be doing to keep up. He probably thought we "finally made it" when SMU was invited to the Big East, only to watch that conference collapse. Now with so many posters getting excited about the PAC 12, I suspect that would ultimately be yet another horrible mistake as I agree with froggie that the Big Ten and Big XII are far more likely to decimate that conference leaving SMU in what would amount to a sorry WAC 2.0 with Pacific & Mountain time zone games making the conference an after thought to the majority of the country.
