NIL and the portal were apparently also big factors in Tony Bennett's decision to abandon UVa MBB on the eve of the season and go preach or whatever.
Yep - and Bennett said he hopes NIL will be better regulated in the future. I don't disagree, but any regulation will just lead to more cheating, unless there is an independent enforcement body whose fortunes are not tied to revenue. That automatically eliminates the NCAA as an enforcement body.

Yes, Bennett said exactly that during his surprise exit. What made his departure was the timing, just a few weeks before the start of the season.
Hahaha, all credit to mrydel for that one.

How bad was UNC this year? They didn't have to play SMU.
Or Miami.
Or Clemson.
Or Syracuse.
Or Louisville.

So they only had to play 2 teams with winning conference records (Ga Tech and Duke), yet they still went 3-5. I know their QB got hurt in the first quarter of game 1, but still, this is bad.

Does that mean he wants the Cal job or Stanford? And he'd still be an ACC coach. Strange days indeed.

I think it's a joke about Tony Bennett the lounge singer.

VERY weak schedule. Should have been at least 10-2, even losing the best of 3 QBs for the year in Game 1.

In Mack's 6 year second stint at UNC, he lost at least 2 games a season he should have won based on the talent he had at hand and on the schedule strength.

Mack started out strong but faded at the end. Brown thrived as a coach under the old rules by mainly being a top flight recruiter. Once college football transitioned to the transfer/NIL age, he lost his advantage.

Looks like we're going to land either Matt Campbell, Sumrall or Belichick :).

Sumrall will be good. So will Belichick, as long as Tom Brady still has another year of college eligibility.

We don't play UNC until 2028, according to the current ACC sched. Too bad it's not sooner.

Don't worry. Be Happy. Or not.

It is a risky hire, no doubt. But the god thing is that for the first time ever, literally, UNC has out big money behind trying to make football big. I give a lot of credit to SMU for that. What your posters did for SMU to get into the ACC sent a huge message, and it has paid off massively for you this early.

UNC boosters and Amin people both were realizing that either UNC football gets bigger and better, or else before long non-revenue sports start getting cut. But the SMU example was also important. You can get ver good results quickly if you come up with the necessary big seed money.

Belichick's salary is only guaranteed for 3 years which means that they are making o9t clear they except winning, big winning.

Let's get ACC football so good up and down the league that we expect 3 playoff teams and get them, or 4, every year.

Certainly helps to have the financial advantages of being a state supported/publicly funded university but in today's world of college athletics, it's really important to have wealthy fans/donors who really care about athletics. Most colleges/universities have wealthy alumni but only a certain number of them care enough to "invest" in their alma mater's athletics programs at the level it takes to be competitive these days. As a small private school, SMU has always been at a disadvantage in terms of the size of our student/alumni fan base. It's just really nice to have alumni like David Miller and others who are strongly supporting SMU
