Realistic vs. Overly-optimistic

Keeping it real
Supporting the team is different from unrealistic optimism. "Believing" fans are not the source of winning seasons - that takes good coaching and good players. If we spent the money it takes to hire a proven head coach from a winning Div.1-A program, we might be where TCU is at today. As I am fond of saying, some have done more with less.

TCU has unquestionably done it with a pronounced uptick in recruiting and a level playing field with NCAA minimum qualification standards. Based upon the uptick in recruiting alone I very publically predicted on these boards at least a 5 game winning streak over SMU years ago because of the HUGE disparity in talent in the two programs. They have not done it with less--- they have done it with flat out better talent than the vast majority of teams on their schedule. Is it Top 20 Talent? No. But they unquestionably out recruited the teams on their schedule which leads to 8, 9 and 10 win seasons, bowl games and championships. Hopefully, that gap is narrowing but this year is absolutely critical if SMU wants to make that series competitive in 2005 and beyond.
