Looks like Nevada isn't a lock, could be some horse trading on the horizon.

Espn owns this game and it's the only bowl on a holiday, at night, in primetime. If there is a possibility to make it a high profile match-up they will do it. If Hawaii loses I bet we see some serious horse-trading.

Why's that? Is it because they made up most of the student section for my years at school?

Clarification: myself and others mentioned earlier that the Hawaii Bowl would have to compete with NFL games on Christmas eve. That's actually not true. The latest NFL games on the 24th are 4:15 EST kickoffs. The Hawaii Bowl kicks off at 3pm local time, which I *think* is 8pm EST? Is that right?

Jerry Palm has updated the CBS Sports projections and now has SMU in the ticketcity bowl vs. purdue. Prior to tonight he had us in the AFB.

The rest of C-USA:

Houston - Sugar vs. Michigan
So. Miss - BBVA Compass vs. W. Kentucky (big time shaft as Fedora heads out the door)
Tulsa - AFB vs. BYU
Marshall - New Orleans vs. ULL

I would be very happy if we play Illinois in the Hawaii Bowl! My concern with going to Hawaii has more to do with the opponent than the location. I think the Hawaii Bowl has plenty of cache, but we need a good opponent to help enhance the Bowl. Heck, I'd be happy playing BYU or UCLA in Hawaii.

I just want SMU to play a quality opponent. If we go Hawaii vs. a WAC team that does little. We have everything to lose and nothing to gain (especially if the possibility of playing Nevada again exists).

Repeat bowl matchups -- unless they are between two major programs -- will kill the buzz around the bowl.

SMU vs. Illinois in Hawaii -- Fine. It would stink not to play it here but a better opponent.
SMU vs. Purdue at TCB -- Great on all fronts.
SMU vs. Ohio State at TCB -- We can dream....

I disagree. Hopefully, we won't play Nevada again in Hawaii, but just playing in the Hawaii Bowl is a good thing for our program, even against a WAC team. Good for recruiting, good for exposure (only night game on Christmas Eve), good for players. Maybe its not a top-tier bowl, but I'd much rather SMU be connoted with the Hawaii Bowl than, for instance, the Beef O'Brady Bowl. What the hell is a beefobrady? Sounds like "meat on a stick and then go home and take a [deleted]."

I thought this was the nickname for a buffed up Greg from the old sitcom.

Whatever it is, I'm shocked they made it in business past the first month.

BR -- I agree that a bowl is a great selling point but if you beat Illinois or Purdue much less play them, you can get a recruit's attention even more than say if you beat Utah State (just an example) in the Hawaii.

But kids are kids...hard to know what they are thinking anyway.

Beef o'brady's is a chain "irish pub" sports bar thing I think they are based in Fla, we went there to eat in Panama city last winter. If you end up at a Beef Obrady's ever, a word of warning. The hot wings aren't what I call hot . The next step up is Nuclear.... And you know how wings usually gradually step up heat levels, yeah well not at Beefs. they got from called hot but not actually to no [deleted] nuclear.
