One thing and the only thing you guys need to know about JJ is that SMU will live and die by the R&S. He is a true believer in his system. The whole football team is geared to the R&S. The main job of the defense is to get the ball back so the offense can score. That is why the D is a high stakes gambling D that is geared to make turnovers. It is the job of the defense to have the opposition score one less point than the R&S. Everything is to give the ball to the O so it can score. So expect the D to give up a lot of yardage and points and hope they win the turnover battle. Make sure you take your heart medicine. If you don't have any, get some. It won't be boring. I guarantee that. You will be squeezing your @$$e$ to the last second. The last one with the ball wins the game.
The Special Teams is geared to kick the ball without any turnovers or penalties so the defense can get the ball back for the offense. There were no attempts to block kicks in Hawaii. Maybe a couple times in JJ's nine seasons at Hawaii. With Gantz coaching ST, that might change.
In the beginning it will get ugly. By the second half of the season watchout. The Oline should be gelling and the R&S should be cranking. When it works, its a thing of beauty. If the Oline cannot get it together, kiss the season goodbye. This is JJ's first season. The fact that no one in the conference have never played against JJ's brand of R&S is already an advantage for SMU.
In JJ's first year at Hawaii, he had no time to recruit. Usually he recruits at least 6 or 7 QBs including walkons but he didn't have time. His moto was that you can never have enough QBs. He converted a RB to LB who turned out to be a starter. He converted a DE to OT. After one season as a partime starter, the OT entered the NFL draft as a junior and was picked in the sixth round. He turned a walkon WR into an all WAC 2nd round draft pick. There are many stories like that. He turned a Hawaii basketball player who never played organized football and turned him into a DE NFL draft pick. He went to the Sugar Bowl on a $60,000 recruiting budget. They recruited with CDs and on the internet.
It's going to be ugly and every week will be a heart attack but keep the faith, every season will be better than the previous. SMU has so much MONEY and the facilities! I'm excited already!!!!
It's the end of the end and the beginning of the beginning!
