So make the assumption Mack would entertain the idea of coming to SMU. How much would it take to get him? He was making over $5M/year. Would he take half that to come to SMU? Would SMU raise some more money and go to $3M? Plus staff. Lots of $$$$.

I think you probably have to give him $3M for 5 years and also a pretty sizeable increase for the assistants. The money is there. We aren't going back to paying our HC less than $1M.
If what Dutch is saying about the power brokers at the school knowing that this next hire likely determine where we end up in regards to big time football then they have to know that to get a guy like Mack Brown to come here its going to cost some money.

I think the university has to look at this hire as the last stand for the football program. Say whatever you want about JJ (God knows I have) but the SMU job is about 100000x better today than it was in 2007 when he took over here. We've been to four bowls in five years, we've moved up the conference realignment ladder (albeit maybe just half a rung up), and we're much more visible now thanks to the TV deal with ESPN. When JJ got in 2007 we were going on 20 years of suckage, no TV, no exposure, and really not much hope.
Now saying all that now you add a dynamic personality and recruiter like Mack Brown to what has been built here over the last several years. The job is no longer considered a coach killer. We're going to pay our HC a Top 40 salary and we're going to give this thing one last serious chance at getting back to the big boy table. Mack Brown would have SMU in the Top 25 by 2016 and we'd be an absolute terror to play by 2017 and beyond.

I think Mack Brown is the closest thing out there to a Larry Brown-esque savior for the football program. He's got a national championship, an unbelievable record as a recruiter in Texas, has the personality and charisma to rejuvenate our apathetic fans/alumni, and maybe most importantly....he has something to prove. If indeed he's in the mix and is gracious enough to listen to what we have to offer we would be insane not to entertain him.
I'll say this too. Attendance and general buzz around the program wouldn't be a problem anymore.

When JJ arrived, I had given up on the program and focused on UT. Why? It was impossible to watch any SMU games, hear any SMU games, or get any SMU information in the DMN (even online) on the East Coast.
While life as a SMU FB fan isn't great, it is a million times better than it was 10 years ago.

Why would we pay him 3M when he is not making that kind of money now? It is not like we are trying to pull him from a job making 2.5 mil per year. He is basically unemployed.

There is no way SMU should or would need to pay Mack Brown 3 to 3.5 Million Dollars a year. Who cares what he got in his last job- he got fired from that job. Nobody else is bidding against you. His market rate has plummeted. And I'm not totally against Brown but let's not just throw money at him.
I see Rebel10 beat me to it

Throw money at the real difference makers - the assitants and recruiters.
Beatty, Spavital, whoever. Get the figure head (if that is the path we want to go, like Larry Brown) in Mack, and kill it on the staff.

Fun to think of the SMU recruiting posters with both Larry and Mack featured, with the saying, "What Brown Can Do For You".

Mack Brown at least got a QB he coached to play in a regular season game which is something a JJ coached QB has never done.
