If you are hiring a coach to handle both safeties and LBs, does that open up a spot for a dedicated special teams coach?

The rumored ST coach can help with other positions.

Way overpaid at SMU.

Pumped that Sonny Dykes is willing to take risks to build the best staff he can and believed he could go after TCU’s DC. Just hope we have a strong plan B, as it sounds like this is unraveling as fast as the news broke.

http://www.star-telegram.com/sports/spt ... 26879.htmlLooks like Chad Glasgow already declined. Hope SMU has the ball moving on someone else already.

wow! even top dollar can't get good coaches to smu. this guy is still looking - he just didn't want to come to smu.
hope dykes had a ready backup and can get him signed today. Recruiting period is now open season and we really need to get the best of the 'sloppy seconds' that remain.

So, for OC we went to a peer school and grabbed their guy. And for DC we went hard after a P5 DC. Who actually thought about it for a week.
These are both significant steps up in targets from coordinators we have hired in the past.

We should go the Mike Grundy route for a DC. Hire the best D2/D3 coordinator that nobody is after and would be thrilled with the pay bump.

If you were a DC considering an offer from SMU and had taken the time to research SMU's returning defensive personnel, would you want to leave a good job and take a risk that Sonny will remain loyal to you until the roster matures or gets recruited over...or are you confident you can do so much better than the previous staff that you are willing to jump ship right away?
I find it amusing that a coach can go so quickly from genius to dog status in this business and how quickly people forget that great players make coaches great.

Mike Gundy might just hire the guy we tried to hire to be his DC.

Careful, you can't be too creative here. Some folks only like hires coming from top 25 P5 schools.

Wasn't that Malone's excuse? So you're saying there are still no defensive difference makers after 4 classes of Morris recruits?
Crazy

4 Classes? The Class of 2018 hasn't even gotten on campus yet. Only about 2.5 years of recruiting classes have played discounting redshirts and as pointed out many times before only about 6-7 recruits in the first class were physically cleared and/or actually put on the defensive side of the ball.

Really?? IMO they are at half-staff and don't seem to have a sense of urgency to fill the rest of the positions. Amazing that a new coach for a pro team can build a full staff in less than 24 hours and we are still hoping to find coaches after 30 days on the job.
Wonder if Dykes knows that those unfilled schollies aren't carried over to next year.
