Dallas needs the "rocket docket" like we have over here in Marshall at the Federal Court.
Despite SCOTUS Judge Scalia's rather absent-minded remark that we are a "rogue jurisdiction", we have a court and a judge that works under the operative guideline that work begins @ 8AM and ends @5PM for judges and attorneys alike. If you are not prepared by trial date, something is wrong with you, not opposing counsel. You don't get a mulligan unless you are deathly ill, and you don't get to drag proceedings out in the name of spending the other side's money. In other words, continuances are rare, so do your job.
I tend to like that ethos. I have to live by it. No offense to the attorneys on this site, but you all should have to as well.
Vodicka wouldn't last two minutes before he'd get shredded. Too bad this isn't a patent or intellectual property case.

One of my friends in west texas claims there is at least one rocket docket out there as well where he practiced for a few years. Something about an urban legend of a lawyer asking for a continuance claiming one of their relatives had passed and the judge responding with: "They'll hold"
I know...bad, mean judge.

The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia has been known as the "rocket docket" for half a century. Unsuspecting lawyers come in there and suddenly see a discovery order saying that discovery must be completed within 120 days. Trial in six months. They ask for a week for trial and are granted three days. Duplicative testimony is met with words from the bench like, "Haven't I heard this before?" There are anecdotal stories how a lawyer went in for a continuance since lead counsel had a heart attack the night before trial and the judge said, "I see you signed a motion in this case, proceed counsel". Another came in asking for a continuance because his mother died and the judge remarked, "she'll keep". Rocket docket stories are great stuff.

..last night I took my son to "college night" here in Memphis. Stopped by the Baylor booth..nice ladies, very informative. But, this Baylor grad chick just starts going off about how Baylor is SUCH a better choice for the Bush Library and there is no doubt they will get...real cocky / arrogant (like an SMU grad..). She really pissed me off,,I wanted to come across the table at her....

How 'bout stalking him...just for that uncomfortable feeling? Some SMU students (WHO WILL GO UNNAMED HEREAFTER IN THIS THREAD) have some experience with that.
<ahem>
That was a joke. Totally and completely a joke.
Wonder if my post will get this thread deleted?
