So, basically what you're saying is, don't bother, we're comfortable with our ceiling of one day losing to the 5th best CUSA team in a shoddy third tier bowl in the 3rd week of December.
Not at all.
First, if you that the WAC will be able to maintain those bowl ties after the defections of Boise, Fresno, Nevada (and soon Hawaii) you are sniffing glue. Especially when you consider that their replacements are all FCS teams currently. They will be lucky to keep ONE bowl tie-in - not the Humanatarian either, that will drift away with Boise State.
The Sun Belt will benefit from this. The Sun Belt is far more attractive than the post-apocalypse WAC. Most of the "new" teams will need an exemption to even be able to join the conference because you are supposed to wait two years before you can join an FBS conference after moving up to FBS. If it is not granted, then the WAC will not be able to maintain a football schedule for two years. MMMMM... sounds great to bowl committees doesn't it?
So you are telling me that you do not believe in light of those potential ramifications that the WAC did not call NT, Louisiana-Lafayette. ULM, Arkansas State or any other program that could keep their conference at the minimum level necessary to avoid a hiatus in football while awaiting the arrival of four FCS teams (two of which just started football)? Of course they did! They were told no across the board. Who would sign up for that? Most of these "new" programs will be playing in stadia that are not 25,000 capacity. Ark State and NT have recently committed to upgrading facilities and investing in their programs. Troy and Lafayette already have done likewise. The SBC is relatively stable and its programs are committed to improvement. The WAC is lying on the ground from the second kick to the nuts received from the MWC in 15 years.
In short, some, probably most, of those bowls will sever their ties with the WAC and the SBC will likely benefit to some degree.
Now, I personally think that NMSU will be tapped to rejoin the SBC very soon... as soon as we move up to C-USA West. Holla!
