UNT is ok for one of the nonconference games but even a win over a 7-5 Baylor doesn't do anything for us except on a regional and alumni feel-good basis. Are we happy winning 8 games for the longterm future and going to a pretty good bowl ....or do we wanna be great and go to the occassional bcs bowl. If Boise State and TCU can do it then surely SMU can...but you have to want to do it real bad.

Beating a Top 10 team isn't necessary to bust the BCS, even beating a ranked team isn't necessary, just go undefeated and the rest will take care of itself.

If a non AQ team goes undefeated and has no wins over a ranked opponent they will not be in a BCS game.

But you don't need to beat a ranked BCS team. TCU only went to a BCS game after they took Oklahoma off their schedule. Oregon State ended up being not to good last year. In fact the year before that neither Virginia (who was really bad) nor Clemson (who was mediocre) were highly ranked. Sbsmith is right, the idea is just go undefeated.

Utah did it in 2004 (before the double-hosting model began and it was a lot tougher for non-AQs to make the BCS) and Boise State did it in 2006 (began the season unranked and steadily rose in the polls finishing 8th in the Final BCS poll. Beating ranked opponents is not necessary for making the BCS, only going undefeated is.

I left out one other point that I should have mentioned. My statement was about breaking through and getting to your first bcs bowl. Once you get to your first bcs bowl then a team can build on that national prestige or just be a flash in the pan. TCU in the Rose Bowl last year followed a long uphill climb with 11- win seasons and a trip to the Fiesta Bowl the year before. Utah also capitalized. Boise State capitalized. Hawaii blew it after their breakthrough season by letting June go and not committing to be bigtime. In other words, they were satisfied to going back to being average and going to the Hawaii Bowl every now and then. You gotta beat the big boys and go on the road to do it.

TCU did not go to a BCS bowl until they took Oklahoma off their schedules.

what and outstanding demonstration of proving a negative...your assertion is correct and absolutely irrelevant at the same time, bravo.

Proving sbsmith's point that you have to do what you have to do to go undefeated, if it is changing the schedule that helps then do it.

Fact is they kicked BCS [deleted] for 12 years with about a 65% winning per centage. They built a reputation by scheduling and beating tough teams. SMU will never get there without doing the same. Some of you are so pathetic. Here's an idea-how about building a team that actually deserves a BCS bid rather than sliding through by their panties against What'sAMatter U. or Texas School for the Blind. Earn it.

Anyway we can get in and get the publicity and money is fine with me. Put OU back on TCU's schedule over the last 2 years and they don't go to a BCS bowl either. We don't have the same flexibility as TCU so we have to get there by any means necessary. many were talking about how weak TCU's and BSU's schedules were last year but they made it (Utah's wasn't great either when they went to a BCS bowl). I am not saying don't play any BCS team but am saying that we should not load up on them like UNT did. Just being real.

maybe we ought to go Division 1-AA we sure have a lot of fans who think 1-AA. Its just incredible to me how many SMU fans are small -time thinkers -always looking for the easy back sliding way to build this program

I thought you said that we were not recruiting well enough to beat the major BCS schools. Stallion, you'll get your wish in 2013. :D

when is the series with Navy over? it's too bad we now have a trophy for that game, b/c we can't seem to beat them, and we gain nothing for playing them. i know it's been addressed before, but i like rehashing old ideas.

It goes on hiatus 2012-2014 then picks up again 2015-2018.

We took OU off our schd? Are you some sort of Bleacher Report starter kit? We signed a five game series with them in '96 or some such. The final game of the series is next year in FT Worth. Our record in the previous four? 2-2 with both our wins in Norman.

The hate is strong in you.
