Throwing a punch is warranted if someone hits on your wife or slashes your tires. Not because you got your feelings hurt.
Can you imagine how horrible it would have been, how incredibly different all our lives would be, had SMU lost that meaningless football game by 17 instead of 10? Seems more than worth starting a fight in front of a bunch of college kids.
All I'm saying is if your yardstick of how "classy" someone is draws the line at trying to score on the last play of a football game, how can you possibly defend someone who rushes a field and tries to start a fight? Surely I'm not the only one who sees the glaring inconsistency.

Glaring inconsistencies?!? Look who's talking!
How different is your life going to be if somebody hits on your wife/girlfriend? As long as your wife/girlfriend doesn't do anything, I don't think it'd be that different. How different is your life going to be if somebody slashes your tires? You're out a few hundred bucks. Your argument lacks substance.
As mrydel stated, nobody saw Bennett throw a punch. I believe that even Leach said that Bennett never threw a punch. True...things escalated quickly. But, it ended just as quickly with Bennett and his coaches breaking up the "fight" between Tech and SMU. Every story I read just had Bennett yelling at Leach. Bennett was defending his players' honor. Sounds similar to your "hitting on your wife" comment.
College sports is supposed to be about sportsmanship and fair play. It doesn't always go that way...I realize that. You bring up the case of Nebraska. I don't believe that Nebraska was rushing at the last minute to score, going for it on 4th down, passing down the field, taking timeouts. Yes...they did kill Tech in that meeting back in 2000, but they were killing you the entire game. Tech, of course, didn't hesitate to give it right back to them two years later (70-10).
The fact is that what happened two years ago happened. We weren't going to win the game. Leach could have taken a knee instead of trying to cover the spread. He didn't. Tech will always be a bunch of jerks and bullies and I doubt anything will change that. SMU was even with Tech until the 3rd quarter. SMU is much better this year than it was two years ago and we've got a little bit of a chip on our shoulder to boot. Let's see how this game goes.

Uh... dude? I was there.... right up close. I saw no punch. None at all. I saw a man telling another man to stick it. Nothing more nothing less. Maybe Coach B overreacted, but - you know what? - I loved it.
Hopefully our team will tell your team to do the same on the field this year. Until then you can wreck 'em all you want dude.

You are right. Leach as a football coach is powerless to stop the players from committing acts that result in unsportsmanlike conduct penalties.
Another favorite image of mine is the Tech receiver begging the ref for a pass interference penalty on that last play of the Tech-SMU game. Yes, there was absolutely pass interference on that play, but there isn't a ref on this planet that is going to call that.

Alright guys.... enough said. Lets all be good Sportsmen. The fact is we all would like to win this game and get the season started with a win but Tech being Tech will probably try to run up the score and if successful, they will kick our butt. I am going to the game and hope for the best. Regardless, if we have a half way decent QB performance this year, we will probably go to a bowl because the rest of the team is pretty much set. So stay positive no matter what. We have alot to be positive about. This year is the year we will look back to and say it was the turning point in SMU Football !

All the more reason to get our licks in now. And I like to hang out with no-class drunks...Leach is not welcome in our group anymore because he's an @sshole.

And now I know why you gravitate toward my seats.
