New Coach Suggestions

His head is on the chopping block -no doubt-I recognized the same thing when Cavan lost the killer losses in his last year and he had a hell of a lot better record than 11-36 or whatever it is. But I haven't changed my position-it ludicrous-here we have a coach in his 5th year 16 years after the DP and we are still trying to get changes made to make the program competitive. Step 1 has been ignored. Create a Model that will let you compete on an even basis with your natural and traditional rivals-then go hire a Coach. As usual this school is backassbackwards and should just stop hiring coaches until they build the foundation.. It will get us no where. That being said this job is a helluva a lot easier than when Gregg, Rossley and Cavan took over-I've said SMU has made about 85-90% of the changes that need to be changed. Bennett should be held to a higher standard than the previous coaches and I really don't feel like playing the devil's advocate based solely on the few changes that need to be changed.

Is there much concern with how poorly Butch did as a head coach in the NFL?

Look at what he did at Miami, went from probation to National Title talent in 5 YEARS!!! I'm not saying he could work that kinda magic in 5 years at SMU but once he got recruiting I think he could get the Ponies to bowl games consistently and maybe a conference championship

Norm Chow Bio:

Norman Chow (born May 3, 1946) is the offensive coordinator of the Tennessee Titans, a National Football League team. He has also been an offensive coordinator at the University of Southern California, North Carolina State University, and Brigham Young University.

Chow won the 2002 Broyles Award as the nation's top assistant coach. He also was named the 2002 NCAA Division I-A Offensive Coordinator of the Year by American Football Monthly and was named the National Assistant Coach of the Year in 1999 by the American Football Foundation. He is known for developing quarterbacks such as Jim McMahon, Steve Young, Ty Detmer, Phillip Rivers, Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart.

Chow, a native of Honolulu, Hawaii and an alumnus of Punahou School, played college football for the University of Utah. Chow was an 2-year starter and a 3-year letterman offensive guard for the Utes. In his senior season, Chow was named to the All-WAC first team and gained All-American honorable mention honors. He then played briefly in the Canadian Football League, for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, before an injury ended his professional athletic career. He was selected to Utah's All-Century Team.

Chow left USC in spring 2005, after helping it to its second consecutive national championship. He was widely considered the favorite for the head coach position at Stanford University. However, he was passed over in favor of Walt Harris, and subsequently joined the Titans under head coach Jeff Fisher, a USC graduate. Chow would have been the only Asian-American head coach in college football.

He spent the 2000 season as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at North Carolina State, where he helped the Wolfpack to an 8-4 season and a victory in the Micronpc.com Bowl. The NCSU passing offense was ranked 15th nationally (292.6). His quarterback, Philip Rivers, was a Freshman All-American who completed 53.7% (237-of-441) of his passes for 3,054 yards with 25 touchdowns and was 12th nationally in total offense (269.9).

Before that, Chow spent the previous 27 years (1973-99) at BYU. At various times, he was the Cougars' assistant head coach, offensive coordinator, co-offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach, receivers coach, recruiting coordinator and graduate assistant (1973 and 1974).

He coached 6 of the NCAA's top 16 career passing efficiency leaders and was involved with squads that hold 11 of the top 30 single season passing yardage totals in NCAA history. He coached in 22 bowls at BYU and was on the staff of the Cougars' 1984 national championship team. BYU went 244-91-3 during his time in Provo.

He was named the National Assistant Coach of the Year in 1999 by the American Football Foundation and in 1993 by Athlon. He was the 1996 Division I Offensive Coordinator of the Year by American Football Quarterly. In 1996, he was a finalist for the Broyles Award.

Among the Cougar players he coached were a number of future NFL stars, including quarterbacks Steve Young, Jim McMahon, Marc Wilson, Gifford Nielsen, Ty Detmer and Robbie Bosco, plus tight end Todd Christensen. Detmer won the 1990 Heisman Trophy and was a Davey O'Brien Trophy winner (twice), as were Young and McMahon.

Chow began his coaching career as the head coach at Waialua (Hi.) High for 3 seasons (1970-72) before going to BYU.

He earned his bachelor's degree in physical education from Utah in 1968, his master's in special education from Utah in 1970 and his doctorate in educational psychology from BYU in 1979.

He prepped at Punahou High in Honolulu, Hi., starring in football, basketball and baseball.

Although he resides in Nashville most of the year, Chow maintains his permanent residence in Manhattan Beach, California, and his sons still attend USC. Chow and his wife, Diane, have four children. Carter (32), Maile (30), Cameron (25) and Chandler (20).

Stallion I suppose you are right.

Butch Davis would prefer the A&M job and they can afford him.

If we don't get him I hope A&M does so the Aggies might be able to beat those stinking Longhorns!

Sounds like A&M would offer him or maybe Arkansas would if they continue to struggle. As much as I hate him Chuck Amato is probably getting the boot at NC State after the season ends if any of you guys want that d&*%#@bag

Yep, He is 60 and although he has been a great OC...how many high school kids have ever heard of him? Also, what kind of recruiting ties does he have in Texas? And the dream continues...

Geez...talk about old...the guy is 67 for Pete's sake. Yeah I know there are a few out there that are older, but they aren't rebuilding a football program from the bottom up.

How about George Wendt disguised as Mike Ditka? That way every time he has a press conference he can.. "Da Stangs." Besides, Ditka is too busy making movies about coaching dysfunctional kiddie soccer teams.

BTW, Why would Chow want to come to a college job like this when he's in the pros making good money and not have the whip of dealing with Recruiting,etc. Not to mention that he is probably just foaming at the mouth waiting to have Vince Young leading his offense at Tennessee.
