It feeling like it all made sense and was part of a plan started to feel hollow with the PJ announcement. Unless followed closely by candidate #1a taking the job within days of PJ declining. Back to the drawing board trying to contact Troy Calhoun doesn't give one that feeling. Oh yeah, its the academy plan.

Who said that firing Bennett after we were ineligible for a bowl would lead to a quicker hire of a new coach? Bennett got fired midseason to end speculation on his job and end the distraction it was having on the team. It also allowed Orsini to get started earlier, but it surely doesn't mean we have to get a coach first, second, or whatever. I don't care if we're the sixteenth team to get a coach if get a good coach.

Maybe this is news (caveat: I haven't done an exhaustive search to see if it was posted elsewhere but since this is the definitive update string...):

http://coachingcarousel.blogspot.com/

SMU

I am told that Rick Neuhiesal is out of the running, if that is true that is a shame.

Dom Capers - SMU has visited with him, i am not sure of his interest.

Fran - brings TX recruiting knowledge but also brings i just failed at A&M also.

Glen Mason - i was told he had another interview recently.

Chan Gailey - would be a great fit and who i think is most likely.

Yeah, it's been posted. So has this, but might as well get them all on one page:

SMU

Things are flying here now that Paul Johnson out of the picture.

I am told four targets will be talked to: ex-Northwestern and Colorado coach Gary Barnett, former Texas A&M coach Dennis Franchione, ex-Georgia Tech coach Chan Gailey and Hawaii's Jones, who will talk to SMU on his way back from the Heisman ceremony

You can check my past post, I've said it before, the search commitee was told to expect a new coach the first or second week of December. Orsini's not stupid he new SMU would be a tough sell and I'm sure expected some rejection, this isn't his first rodeo. Not all schools get their first or second choice coaches, look at michigan and Arkansas. I still say we're in good hands and I expect will have a coach by the end of the week or sooner. Don't listen to this guy biggin he's just trying spread descent.
actually my guess was very low-89% of the Texas Top 100 have already committed. Now I realize that there are other good players but this demonstrates that you can't sit on your [deleted] and wait till January to get a Coach.
............I agree in general with you Stallion on recruiting, but because of the mistaken delay for apparently PJ, we still have to get this coaching hire right. Hopefully, we get this situation resolved this week and get a quality new coach that can somewhat salvage our recruiting this year.

New to this board.....and somewhat new to the SMU Football scene. I was actually introduced to SMU football by a current student there, aactually walked around the campus a couple of times, (loved the scenery) and even stopped by the administration office a couple of times. But to get to the point of the post: HIRE JUNE JONES or Glen Mason. There a couple of fundamental football reasons to do this. First, the run and shoot fits your personnel almost to a T. His recent acknowledgement that he has recruited kids from a bad background will chap some of the alumni, but for the most part if he keeps them on the straight and narrow, he'll draw plenty of recruits from inner city Dallas. Trust me I know some of these kids, and I have been explaining to many of them the benefit of going to SMU. Close to home, good education, easier playing time (keeping it real), and if you plan to make Dallas your home, SMU is a good name to throw around with a good GPA. These kids that are going to Kansas State, Kansas, Iowa State and the like would come to SMU if recruited them. I know for a fact that Terrance Williams (WT White), Chris Gipson (Kimball), and Troy Stoudamire (Skyline) weren't contacted by SMU during the recruiting period this year, and or last. There are many other kids, who are straight athletes that would make a huge difference with this school, just put them in the proper place, and coach them up. Hell, Leon Patton went to WT White and wasn't recruited. You need a guy who at least shows the willingness to go and recruit from the inner city.
Glen Mason, would be a good hire, because of the zone blocking schemes he uses. Truthfully, all the coaches you are contacting now, are better than Paul Johnson, hell, I would've jumped on Barnett if he was interested. I'm ranting and it's late I'll make a more understandable post tomorrow after getting rest.

.................Why are you so worried about recruiting this year right now ?? It is not going to get any better unless we get a great coach that can recruit. Sure there has been screw ups with this long term wait, but at this point, we have to get this coaching hire right..... I mean you need to remember that Rivals rated our recruiting class in 2006 #107 and last year we finished with Rivals rating of #99. Our team just finished 1-11. Getting all 2 star guys and a couple of 3 Star guys will not cut it........... Orsini knows this and even if we get all 2 star guys this year, it is OK because with a good coach, the future in coaching and recruiting will get better. Right now all we can do is get the right coach and hopefully he can recruit a few good players this year late.

you dont know anything about college football then if you dont know how important recruiting really is...especially when it comes to JUCO players...if we dont manage to contact some JUCO players this week then we are at a huge loss come spring ball.

Last year we got 1 ESPN 150 recruit and this year we'll get NONE...sad times in my mind

you cant get the coach hire right when youve failed twice...oh wait, whats that saying, "THIRD TIMES THE CHARM"...maybe it'll work for us

I've always said I'd be okay as long our new coach was a proven winner and a trade up from PB (Barnett, Bowden, Mason, Fran, etc). Plese tell me that we are not seriously interviewing Dom Capers.
