Athletic director Steve Orsini has been in contact with Leigh Steinberg, the agent for Hawaii coach June Jones.
A source also said Rick Neuheisel held off SMU as long as he could until he could find out if UCLA really wanted him. Indeed, that was the case, and Neuheisel took the Bruins' post on Saturday.
If Jones is SMU's man, and it looks as though he is despite his public denials, the position likely won't be filled until after the Warriors' Sugar Bowl game with Georgia on Tuesday.
Former Texas A&M coach Dennis Franchione and ex-Miami coach Larry Coker also are in the mix.
If you read the article it states that Orsini has been in contact with Steinberg, the agent for JJ. It did not specifically state that they were discussing JJ as the next HC. Steinberg represents several HC's in college and pro, including Jim Harbaugh.

Well, by that rationale, I suppose he could have written that we were in touch with Leigh Steinberg, agent for Steve Bartkowski. But that would not make much sense in the context of our coaching search, would it bigdaddy?

The writer is saying that Jones is probably the guy.

No, that is what you are reading into it. I read, Orsini is in contact with Steinberg, the agent for JJ. He could have mentioned several other coaches, but it would not make any sense. It is the writers job to take what has been posted by everyone else and try to make a good story, or a story for people reaching to have something to hope for. JJ is not coming here! How many different ways can he say it. In Samoan, its still, I am not interested in SMU. Every news article posted has been wrong. Stop listening to the news. Read between the lines. We don't have a coach, Orsini does not know who our next coach will be, and we are running out of time.
You don't know any more than anyone else on here. No one on this board can say they know he's not leaving UH. For a lot of people, money talks. We can almost triple Jones' salary. Plus, that money goes a hell of a lot farther in Dallas than it does in Hawaii. Maybe the greatness of Hawaii has worn off, the money is a bigger lure than you think, the salary is beginning to be insulting, the facilities are beating him down, etc. If you think he's not at least thinking about it, you're nuts.

C'mon, I love SMU as well as you do, but try to stay realistic about this search. JJ will have far many options than coming here if he wants to leave UH. Keep it real! We need to get a realistic coach for our program and get started. Workouts begin next week. We need to stop the BS and get to work. Bring in someone who wants the damn job and let's make a run at it. I do agree he has nothing left to prove at Hawaii, but JJ has nothing left to prove period.
Jones is using us, like Johnson and Neuheisel and who-knows-who else before him, to get more money out of Hawaii or some other school. I don't blame him for doing it. I just hope we have a decent back up plan on January 6th or whatever.
NFL? 22-39 record in NFL. That would scare a lot of NFL teams away. College. Major programs without a coach right now? West Virginia. So, what other options does he have NOW than SMU? If he wants to leave Hawaii, and that's a big IF, we're his only real choice at this point.

Nick Saban, Butch Davis, Pete Carroll and Lou Holtz didn't have great NFL track records, either.
Does someone have a media guide to look up the attendance in the early 80s? I'd bet it was more than Ford holds.
EDIT: the only thing i have been able to find was our attendance average for 1978: 51,000.
In the early 80's we drew in the mid-30s. The Texas game and sometimes Arkansas would draw in the 50s, but many of the other games drew in the 20s.
I didnt look this up, just recalling off the top of my head. Most schools will let you download a copy of the media guide from their website, but apparently SMU wants to sell you a hardcopy, instead.

Baltimore just fired Billick, Parcells will fire Cameron. Is Atlanta still looking for a coach? Several other postions in the NFL will be available at seasons end.
Attendance in the 70's and 80's was bolstered by the SWC, arguably the best conference in the country, coupled with the close proximity of the opposition. Often our home field attendance was out populated by the opposition much as it is now when we play Tech in Ford. In its best years, SMU may have gotten to the 35,000 average attenance of OUR fans, but we have never been one to fill the stadium by ourselves. Now with our fellow competitors farther away and being in one of the lowest ranked conferences around, I do not see attendance improving greatly very quickly. Winning, however, could lessen the echo heard when you talk to the other person sitting on your row.

A motivating factor than hasn't really been addressed is not only what JJ could make for himself, but how he could also take care of his staff in a move. It's been stated that UH doesn't pay his staff much and JJ obviously cares about them as evidenced by his passing on the $100K bonus he received from boosters.
We could pay his staff more than UH and when factored with a reduced cost of living and no state taxes, JJ could not only take care of himself but also take good care of his people. True, they wouldn't be sipping mai-tais on Waikiki Beach, but they could have a beer at the White Rock Yacht Club at equivalent double to triple the salary.
