28 Samoans in the NFL, only 9 skill positions three linebackers, two tights ends, two fullbacks, one halfback and one quarterback -- play the so-called "skill positions."
Stallion where does it say 40 times than a "white" boy, I only see a reference to American males in general not a specific race. In a seperate article June Jones is quoted as saying he has to go to the mainland for skill position players, next to last paragraph.

Hey, and if JJ comes here with those boys and forgets more football than we could ever learn, then he simply has Poly-amnesia.

No doubt, most of those Polynesians are pretty big boys. Jones definitely has a certain advantage in Hawaii in that he has the pick of the litter so to speak without any other colleges in the state to compete with...sort of like UT.

So even though he didn't get to recruit the mainland much, he really didn't need to. This all leads us back to the old debate about whether or not it is the quality of the players that make a coach look great or whether a great coach gets the most out of their players regardless of their talent. His QB this year wasn't Polynesian, but evidently played very well (understatement). I have to assume coaching had some influence there. When it is all said and done I don't think anyone here disputes his coaching ability, but I have to agree that recruiting to SMU is a real challenge that most coaches will have problems with...at least initially. Bottom line, we don't really know if Jones is who SO is after, but I would not be unhappy with him although I think there is still something huge to be said for Fran's recruiting connections and past jobs of turning "down programs" around. Either way, we will be way above where we have been in the past.
As mrydel says, its a beautiful day to hire a coach. Let's do it.

JJ has taken UH to bowls in 6 of 9 seasons, and 2001 he went 9-3 and DID NOT go to a bowl. Pretty solid stuff!

I would just be happy with a coach by June.

Yes, I know it's a long shot, but i'm still hoping for June, in January.

That's fine. If he/she turns this thing around, they deserve a reward (better job). We will attract more interest in our next search in 2010.

Very true. If June became SMU's coach, I don't think we would have a sudden influx of Polynesian players. They are part of Hawaii's recruiting pool, it's not because Jones specifically targeted them. I think he just took advantage of their natural affinity for that program. Not saying he might not get a couple from Trinity, but don't expect that to be his strategy here, and don't expect that would be his detriment here either because he doesn't have that to count on.

Right - he might pull a few from the Euless/Bedford area, where A&M used to snag guys like Semisi Heimuli and his cousin (forget his name), but it's not like he'll be doing all of his recruiting in the islands if he chooses to come here.
His name and offense will sell, though. He can recruit.

At this point either would be a welcome addition I would think. I voted for Jones in the "poll" but gotta say Ive read some great points regarding Fran. And ya gotta admit it would be fun to squish the frogs with Fran on the sidleines.
