We are no longer welcome to recruit at Tyler Lee.

Every committed recruit was told by the Athletic Department, once Bennett was let go, that neither the school nor the player was committed to the other.
This is no surprise.
And as to the timing of the ultimate callback, Owens may want to remember that June Jones only hit the ground last Tuesday, and then was quickly off to Houston.
By the way, when was the last time you saw a high school coach jump up on a soap box when one of his players changed his commitment?
(And, yes, it is true that Bennett repeatedly said that the biggest mistake he made when he came here was honoring Cavan's deathbed commitments.)
Apparently, there are some people pretty upset by this. One supposed father of a recruit that's been offered by SMU is reconsidering...
Posted on other board by win1free: "My son was offered by Coach Jones, but reading about this makes me wonder about the Coach, to put a kid out in the cold makes no sense!!!
SMU took its sweet time in getting a coach and asked the recruits to please hang in there and this is how this young man is rewarded."
Sounds bogus to me. What other board are you referring to? Glad we took our sweet time.

Some of you were silly to think this would be positive or at least neutral in SMU's recruiting efforts. This likely won't cripple our recruiting, but it definitely away some of the buzz we had going from the hire.
Call me silly, then. Though I certainly don't think it will be viewed as positive (nor is it positive). But neutral? Yeah, I think I am there. A year from now, regardless of whether Jones wins during his first year coaching at SMU, I don't think this issue will matter. If it does, then the standard is being selectively applied.

You're right. It won't matter next year. Whatever our record next year will be the biggest difference maker in our recruiting success next year. My point was this will hinder this year's recruiting class. It won't destroy it, but I wouldn't be surprised if it impacts some recruits' decisions.

It kind of sucks for the kid, but at the same time, if the needs of the team change based on the new coach, it doesn't help either the player or the coach to bring him in anyway. Either the kid would sit for 4 years or he would end up transferring. In the long run, it will be best for both parties.
This is NOT the same as a coach offering a kid and the same coach dropping him four months later.

Thanks. Just read through the thread and Farrell's response was right on. I was curious about something BRstang said in his post. He said the kid had been offered and was reconsidering. Does that mean he has committed?
May have been a poor choice of words to say "reconsidering." I don't remember if he has committed or not or if he used that word. But I have to go and I don;t have time to look it up again. All I know is what you now know from having read that thread.

My personal experience with this involved my next door neighbor who was offered by Ron Meyer when he was at SMU. The boy was also offered by Texas Tech, but SMU was his choice. When signing day came - yes, the actual signing day - SMU said it did not have a scholarship for him. To make an exceedingly long story, short - Texas Tech coaches helped him and "got" him a scholarship to Vanderbilt. He played for Vandy 4 years - got a meaningful degree, and is a successful metroplex businessman. If you're good, things work out.

What i find to be the whole travesty is that this has to be the first time in the history of college recruiting that this has happened. Does this mean that other coaches might start doing this too? This could have a far-reaching impact of the overall landscape of recruiting for years to come!
