The left has forced the divisive issues by installing activist judges who read into the constitution ideas that no elected official would have dared touch. What you see with the "religious right" is in large part an understandable reaction to that.
But I agree that the concepts of fiscal responsibility and limited government have unfortunately taken a bit of the back seat. It's my biggest disappointment with the Bush administration. Well, that and torture -- something that is the antithesis of what this country is all about.
