By the way, I remember when the Mustangs burned a redshirt on a guy named Lance McIlhenny against a team called Texas in 1980. That burned redshirt turned out pretty well! :thumbupcool:

This news suddenly gets me back interested in our winless team. The move was overdue. 10K (really 5K) in attendance is proof of that. If nothing else, it should put a few more butts in the stands.

Am I foolish to assume that Bennett already knows who this JuCo QB is, i.e. does he have a commitment from somebody? Or at least has a fairly good idea? Would he go out on a limb like this if he didn’t, given that SMU and JuCos tend to not mix?

For those that are interested, Coach Bennett's post Boise State comments (via audio file) are now available on
www.smumustangs.com as part of the story on the game.

By the way, I remember when the Mustangs burned a redshirt on a guy named Ricky Wesson in 1973. That burned redshirt turned out pretty well!
Freshman starter Mike Ford was pretty fun to watch too until he hurt his knee during his junior year. The 21 point deficit aerial comeback against Baylor in 78 was awesome especially since I watched the game with my brother who graduated from Baylor 2 years later.
Lance McElhaney took over in mid year 80 when Ron Meyer decided it was time for the run oriented Pony Express option to start rolling. The healed Mike Ford was having difficulties getting a balanced attack going even with DickerJames at tailback.
This is also known as having flexibility, and fitting your offensive philosophy to the players you have on hand. We seemed to be doing that more against Boise St., but Bartel was having a really bad day.
From the earlier posts, it seems Bennnett has rightfully decided that Neither Wallis or Bartel is the QB of the future. I kinda decided to myself that Bartel wasn't during the first half yesterday.

And Tulsa has no idea what Phillips' strengths and weaknesses are. So the element of surprise is there.

Why stop at QB? Hell- let's tear all those redshirts off!!!! No one seems to be playing well so why look at QB to blame. Defense was pitiful. Recievers can't get open. Offensive line can't block. This is a stupid move. I hope Bennett calms down and realizes that this team is dead. On the way to 0-11 unless a large amount of R-Ss are lifted. Let's hope he dosen't panic and lift them because then we will possibly go 1-10 but use up the eligibility of a lot of guys who could help rebuild. This is now a throw=away year and NOTHING that damages the future should be done!

The Athletic department is desperate for money. A winless football team and pathetic attendance is a huge concern. Bennett doesn't have the time to build because money is needed now. It isn't about talent or recruiting. It is about putting interest back into football attendance. Our women's sports do well but they don't generate the revenue that a decent football could generate.
We need wins now. A new QB that can run will cause Tulsa problems. Tulsa has not seen this QB at all. As Tulsa loads up for the run we may have the ability to run some option. Gee, Navy did that pretty well to us a year ago. And if we can complete just a few passes, Tulsa will have trouble. We may have a chance against Tulsa.

I will be there. Along with about 6 other Pony fans. We are going from Little Rock, though.
