1) He was a RB in a 1 back Run and Shoot Offense
2) He caught a TON of screen passes and dump off passes from Mitchell and Padron
3) He's not much of a blocker in the backfield
4) He didn't carry the ball in on the goal line on a regular basis.
5) He has only one year of college football active duty.
6) He did not play on special teams.
Now... think about those 6 facts for a second and think about an NFL coaching staff who needs a RB to play immediately. Would you draft this player over a 2,3 or 4 year starter that played at a school that ran first and passed second?
I'm just being honest here guys... If you were an NFL scouting director, what would you do?? I don't want to compare names because that's not the point. Just think about it.
I personally think he won't be drafted. I hope I'm wrong.
BUT, a few of your points are actually positives:
2) That's becoming a big part of the NFL game. A back that can catch is very valuable (Westbrook and Steve Slaton come to mind)
5) Less wear and tear. Especially valuable for smaller backs.
6) May be a good thing depending on how much success, or lack thereof he would have had at SMU. With no film, maybe a scout thinks SP would be good for SM.
The combine will make or break Shawnbrey. Every coach and scout out there is looking for the next Chris Johnson. CJ manhandled the league and I think we are seeing a pendulum swing toward smaller, speedier, elusive runners who can catch. This may be the thing that gets SM drafted.
