ESPN 103.3 just mentioned it looks like the BYU deal with the WAC is off and Montana will be the next invited to join the WAC. Cal Poly and a C-USA school may be extended an invite as well.

I wonder if BYU tilts back towards their independence plan once (and, if) the WAC re-assembles itself into at least an 8-team conference. I'm guessing that if there is more money to be had via utilizing their own tv network, it's something that will remain on the table.

not that I know anything -- but, I can imagine that if the WAC has a real chance of collecting the $10 mil from Nevada and Fresno St., then they might kick some of that to BYU to entice them to leave the MWC and at least lend some credibility and life-support to a re-built WAC. hmm, that might make even more sense if the MWC would ask its membership to kick $$$ into the pot to pay the $10 mil.....

Not quite sure if this is true or not, but it looks like the WAC commish is taking questions from the TxState boards. http://bobcatfans.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=19691

I would think UNT would be doing cartwheels at the chance to be in the WAC. The real lynchpin here is what do the remaining WAC teams try to do? They could try to backfill with teams like UNT, UT-San Antonio, Portland State, etc. What about Eastern Washington? They're a traditionally strong Div1AA program. What about Northern Arizona? Maybe this is the new look WAC?

Hawaii
San Jose State
Utah State
Portland State
La Tech
New Mexico State
Northern Arizona
North Texas
UT-San Antonio
Idaho

LOL. What a travel and logistical nightmare!

You're not serious are you?

the WAC as is is not any better than the Sun Belt, and it is 1000 miles away.

I think the WAC should merge with the Sunbelt and have a 12 team (or whatever) conf.

At this point that is only sure way of knowing that the WAC gets saved but I highly doubt it. Neither NT nor any of the Sunbelt members have expressed any interest in the WAC. And with the way the WAC looks now, it is clearly the worst footbal conference in the nation. Their only hope will to move up FCS schools which definitely won't be a given since the moratorium for the move up is I believe next summer.

And no the WAC right now is not better than the Sunbelt.

Who's left in the WAC? USU, La. Tech, SJS, Hawaii, Idaho, and NMS. Add in Montana, UTSA, or TSU, and you're pretty much a glorified FCS conference. If I am La. Tech, I swallow my pride and go to SBC or the MAC, and beg for admission or wait and see if a CUSA team joins the MWC and beg CUSA for admission. Hawaii can go independent. That could leave on four teams. NMS was independent before, and may go back. SJS was talking about dropping down, the WAC could simply drop down to FCS for football and merge in Montana and others and still have a conference for basketball.

The latest rumor, as of very early this morning, is Utah STate and Hawaii have accepted invites to the MWC.

the MWC will have 12 teams and will create East-West divisions.

Of course this is all contingent on byu staying in the MWC for all sports but FB.

THIS IS JUST RUMOR and lord knows there have been a million of them since last Wednesday evening. Wish us luck folks!!!

If that happens, TCU is going to have a fit! They're back in the WAC that they left 8 years ago.

A quote from USU's board.....

"For those of you who think this would make TCU bolt -- why? Where else are they going to go? An MWC conf. championship game would be HUGE in the possibilities of BCS, especially during years when an undefeated Boise plays an undefeated TCU."

Yeah, except, by losing Utah, and by watering down the conference with these additions, they lose any hope of BCS which is according to every Frog I've talked to, the reason for them joining the MWC. That may be why Thompson is talking to CUSA about a play-in game to the BCS to keep TCU from packing its bags and going back to CUSA with AFA in tow.
