Sorry, it is becoming Kryptonite. Everyone's positions are pretty well entrenched. It would be nice if we didn't have this as a controversy, but I guess we will continue to argue as long all the horses are on the field during the game.

The geldings aren't mustangs, but then again neither is Peruna. Mustangs were wild horses. Peruna has handlers. The "Western motif" doesn't really fit into SMU's style, but I was told by an older alum that back in the 50s there was some sort of pep squad made up of males and females who wore jeans, boots, etc. and welcomed the team onto the field along with the band.

I don't care for the geldings personally. If it were up to me I would get rid of them. It is silly to think that they instill a "winning attitude" in the players. But if June Jones likes the horses- then so be it. It isn't important enough to me to sign a petition or anything like that.

so they dont like your band analogy, but what about the pom squad & the cheerleaders?

we didn't always have both.

we added another gameday on-field tradition to compliment the older tradition

i'm sure these same horse kooks WouldaShoulda been in an uproar about dat too!

me?....we woulda not gone to the Hawaii Bowl without June, we probably lose yesterday
without June....so if June wants the full size horses....hell wave 'em in thru the gate!

in most relationships we don't get everything we want, we gotta compromise.
the horses appear to be here as long as June is....so as long as June is delivering
winning seasons....the horse kooks might as well sit down and shut the hell up!
or keep on barking up an empty tree...cuzz nobody be listening! Ha Ha Ha!

Hey idiot. It is not about what jones brings to the field. I would like you to call me a horse kook to my face. See me next week at the BLVD and we can talk about it.

I wasn't in the Mustang Band, but I find it hard to imagine that they're all narrow-minded. I'm betting you don't like some generalizations some folks make about attorneys, right?

And do you really need radar to see a blimp? Seriously, if you can't see that with the naked eye, there's something wrong. Now small private planes might just register a blip on the radar ... but a blimp?

I love Peruna and the new Mustangs too, the bottom line with people is that

they just don't like change, but if you could go back in time and we had to choose

between a small Mustang or a large Mustang, we might have picked the large Mustang.

We could have...and we didn't

National mascot could have been a turkey instead of bald eagle...

should Mr. butterball donate some wild turkeys to the USA for co-symbol of the greatest country on earth....?

Stand by Peruna, he has stood by us for 80 years...

"Hey idiot"

Yeah Treadway21 I am the "idiot", but you are the whackjob now insinuating
violence over freaking horses at a football game! You really are a kook!

oh and by the way, beyond your implied threats do you have any answer to the
Cheerleader/PomPom squad analogy or do you just threaten people when you
don't have an answer?

If those in "control" of pre-game festivities (who are those guys?) continue to insult SMU fans by forcing the gelding concept down our throats, at least they should bone-up on flag etiquette. In presenting the colors, the flag of the United States ALWAYS goes on the LEFT - even if the colors are being posted by people dressed up as cowboys on a rich trophy-wife's horses. The Flag Code of the United States is the source for flag etiquette. Was not amused when the Texas flag on the UP fire truck over by Doak Walker Plaza was hoisted upside down. However, that was corrected. On another critical note, page 71 in the program highlights SMU Bowl History - Loss to STANDFORD in '35? And we tied Penn State in 1949 (13-13) not a loss to STANDFORD. However, on a positive note, the pigeon crap was washed off the concrete at each entry gate. And we won.
(and it was "96 Guys and a Doll")

A Mustang is supposed to be a feral horse indiginous to the American Southwest. Feral means untrained or "wild". SMU had two options in the 1920's. They could have had a horse and a rider, but a mustang shouldn't be riden, and the school chose a shetland pony that could run without a rider but have handlers on the side. My objection to "Liberty" and "Justice" is that they have riders and they are completely domesticated. They are former Mustangs, not Mustangs. The fact that they are geldings is insult to injury. Yes, they are full sized, but do not have the spirit or wrecklessness that Peruna has shown over the years.

I agree w/those who say we can't compare Peruna vs. the 2 horses to when women joined the band. First, I remember that the band had to open membership up to women per the law---and I always heard that a&m had something to do w/that(which I found ironic). Peruna is THE mascot of SMU--and obviously, the student body and most alums on here, don't want anything to compete w/him in his role. If the band were told that "Peruna" was no longer our fight song and they should play the OSU fight song instead, that is a better comparison and I bet I wouldn't be the only person to go ballistic. My feeling is those 2 horses have absolutely no ties to SMU whatsoever and they shouldn't be there. Good thing I'm not the President---I probably would have told her No thanks and would have let her keep them.
