I recently ran across your post and it just caught my attention. Hoping it's not too late yet. I now work as a teacher here in TX. Anyway, If she has a teacher license from the state and is working in one of the "designated teacher shortage areas" like Science, Mathematics, ESL , Bilingual (Spanish-English only) and Special Education then this would definitely help her get an H1b. Sadly, getting an h1b work visa is like winning a lottery since she will need an employer to petition and deal with the US legal immigration. Which by the way, is VERY messed up! There's no harm in trying. Let me know if I can help. I dealt with legal immigration my whole life in America.

Re: Lets "Keep The Faith" - SMU Fan Needs Help
Sadly Faith (aka "southerncomfort") for the time being was not able to stay in the United States and is back in Japan. Thanks to all who offered help and advice. The game is not over, it's just halftime. Faith is considering her options and may return to the United States for graduate studies. SMU has lost a great, enthusiastic local fan that attended home and away games, however I predict we will see Faith again back at SMU games in the near future. But for now Japan has gained a huge SMU fan and I bet she may be the only owner of an SMU Hawaii Bowl ring on the island of Japan. Good luck in 2011 Faith, keep us posted, and let us know if we can help.

Oh dear haha well I guess a lot of people already knew who I was on the board. And I just wasn't able to find an employer that would go through the steps for a H1-B - I'm not in high demand as a grades 8-12 Social Studies teacher

Haha yeah, I kept that under wraps for years! It depends on when the date of travel is and when you're purchasing the tickets but it can go from anywhere between $1100-$3000+. I know - I did it about twice a year for 4 years!

All I can say is that it's never too late and she has to remain optimistic. I was once an international student and almost lost hope when I finally graduated and couldn't get a work permit. I never stopped trying and even wen back to grad school temporarily just to have a legal status. Falling out of status was never my option so I ended up going through the same immigration mess. I don't want to sound dramatic but if people ask me how many interviews I had attended, I can honestly tell you that As much as I hated it, I worked nonstop just to submit my resume to every school I could find in Tx. Heck I even applied and gone to rural towns and areas I've never heard of across the state and out of state!! I literally became an immigration expert after dealing with them my whole life lol Anyway, if I were her I would go back get some sort of temporary legal status in the us and find an employer or you can suggest that she adds a licensed endorsement in special education. If she has the money and resources she can come back as a b1 tourist which by the way would not be a problem for her since she has a japanese passport I'm assuming. Japan is exempted from tourist visa and citizens can stay here for extra 90 days. Just don't tell the immigration and I mean not mention anything about looking for work under h1b. Hope this helps!
