BREAKING NEWS: We’re now part of a three-conference deal involving Missouri, Memphis and Cal Tech. Apparently, SMU has been invited to the Big East, but has traded the invitation to Memphis in exchange for application rights to the Big XII. We have then exchange the combined the Big XII application with Missouri’s current membership (now SEC-bound), for which we have traded three faculty members to be named later, a year’s supply of beef jerky, and a VW microbus. Cal Tech is doing the math in exchange for the VW. Read it here:

Agreed. I'm actually 51% BE, 49% Big 12 right now (assuming current teams). The Big 12 travel would be better (for both players and fans), but SMU just has a BE feel to me.

SMU has a big east feel to it???? How?

well, if you're talking basketball, which of these groupings sounds like SMU from a student body, academic and overall vibe point of view

Texas
Texas Tech
Kansas
Kansas St

St John's
DePaul
Notre Dame
Providence

Although it will never happen SMU has a very SEC feel to it.

In all seriousness, I see no reason why the Big 12 would have any interest in us. Texas pretty well has a lock on Texas and TCU was brought, in I am certain against the will of Texas, but rather to appease someone for some reason. If media market were considered, TCU and Texas cover the Dallas area more than enough. If another Texas team was to be considered I would expect it to be Houston to cover that market along with the UT pull.

We do not offer anything other than the possibility of winning some recruiting battles against UT and TCU, and the other Texas schools which of course they do not want.

That said, I will be happy with whichever AQ group we fall into, but just do not see why the Big 12 would even have us on their radar. The SEC could make a better case and they do not even know we are a D1 school.

Not sure of the point of this thread unless it is to make us feel better about heading to the BE.

Frankly I have no such need and am happy with the prospect of the new BE as outlined.

I think it will be interesting to find out what happens in the Big East. I prefer the Big East for self-ish reasons, I live in the East. Obviously, UT, TT, TCU, OU, OSU would be much better draws at the gate. But games with AFA and Navy should be close to sell-outs. UH should continue to grow. Boise might if it stays good draw some casual football fans. But USF, UCF, Cincy, UConn, Rutgers, WVU and Louisville probably won't be huge draws. Now in hoops, though, UConn, GT, Marquette, ND, DePaul, WV, Louisville and Cincy should be sellouts. In fact some games may need to be moved to AA Arena with those teams. And if we ever have our women face UConn's women in Dallas, that should be a sellout out. That team is otherworldly. Soccer should generate some decent crowds for teams like ND, UConn, Providence and St. Johns. We'll definitely have better competition in soccer. So, it will be different.

Honestly, no matter where the school goes we will all continue to support it so bring on whatever conference you dare.... when I close my eyes and list off SMU qualities I see the SEC baby!

BE now. bcs games, better recruits and national exposure over the next 3-5yrs. then SEC when it all changes again!
