I heard something also along the lines of there was difficulty getting him to come off of the field when he needed/was supposed to come off. The coaches implored him to leave the field but he suggested otherwise and expressed his sentiment in a less than acceptable manner.

Obviously Reed is key player on our defense, but is anyone else excited as I am to see Pope get some more minutes? If the TCU game was an indication of what Pope can do, then there will be some banged up Hurricanes come Saturday. Pope was a maniac out there.
I don't mean to knock Reed, but I'm predicting Pope will lay some serious "Papal blessings" on the Tulsa ball carriers.
Go Mustangs

I'm with you on this. I was excited by his play at TCU. Wanting to see Pope play isn't a knock on Reed. I want Reed to play too, but Pope showed a lot of promise.

Obviously, I have no idea about the details here but I WANT my linebackers (hell, my WHOLE defense) to be some mean, prideful SOBs. I LOVE that Reed didn't back down from TCU and was pissed about how bad the defense was looking at USM and got pissed - sometimes a little fighting helps. Now, of course, I don't want anyone to hurt anyone intentionally or anything like that but I'd much rather have someone on my side who isn't going to back down and kick a little [deleted] than someone who gets "sportsman of the year" honors. F that. This is FOOTBALL. Go HIT somebody and don't back down from ANYONE! I'm sure Kevin Pope is very athletic, but we will definitely miss Reed on Saturday. This was a dumb move if it was just because of the TCU - USM incident (probably something off the field with the coaches). He seems remorseful on his Facebook page for whatever reason.

couldn't disagree with you more.
it is one thing to play the game with intensity and fury. but, quite another to have uncontrolled rage that is displayed beyond the bounds and discipline of the game.
if we lose a game because a key player is suspended, then so be it. I would much rather have that, than endure a team that is tainted by a few players driven by uncontrolled, selfish emotion.
after all, the goal is not only to establish a winning football program, but to also develop the character of the young men passing through it, as our coaching staff is striving to do.

I don't know what you're disagreeing with. Re-read my post. I want intensity and fury on the field not off it ... rage is very very good on the football field and this team could use more of it! ... character? please ... I'll take Ray Lewis/[deleted] Butkus, etc and you can have your "character" ... this isn't church, this is a very violent sport where people are trying to tear people's heads off don't kid yourself ...

I don't care if you kill someone. As long as you can play ball and we win I want you on the field!!!

personally I'd rather have my middle linebacker be a crazy S.O.B with a mean streak in him, a la Ray Lewis. My only demand is they respect the authority of the coach. The occasional helmet to helmet or illegal hit is OK with me, as it creates the intimidation factor.
It's too bad Reed got suspended, but I like to see the fire. I think Vontaze Burfict on ASU is the perfect middle backer. Phenomenal athlete and total nutcase. He's also in one of my favorite football pics ever:

I'm with you fiji43. Here is what bothers me. And I know it's a hard decision. I would rather make the punishment offender specific. Sitting him a game hurts the entire team. Hurts Reed too but there is pain for all. Run him till he pukes after each practice. Make him the bull in bull ring drills for 15 minutes, with 2 coming at him. Make him watch 25 hours of Oprah reruns. Something. Maybe there is no better way to get the message across to him, but I sure wish someone would come up with a different angle that is as effective.

I like ray Lewis, he plays with fire. Bill Romanowski played with rage. There is a difference.
Ray Lewis always keeps his head in the play and makes the right play. A purely pissed off roid raging dude might play just as hard, but he loses sight of his assignment and goes awol.
If the coach thinks a player is exhibiting the latter (and not following team rules at that ), he needs to discipline the player in a manner that will get his message across.

Also Ray Lewis is highly revered off the field.

Can't throw stones here, but I can see where Jones needs to reel guys in. We want the fire between the whistles not after. I for one like intimidating the other team as much as possible. Just don't cross the line for a 15yarder.
And didn't Ray Lewis kill somebody?
