Many prominent universities in the United States are or at least in the beginning have been affiliated with a church. Not wanting members that discriminate is one thing, not wanting members due to religious affiliation is discrimination.

Not to get in a political discussion, but if people or institutions disagree with the views of the liberal view that shouldnt be consider discrimination or in anyway negative. It should be just the opposing view like any other debate rather than saying one side is only right and the other is a bunch of discriminating red necks. But nevertheless, discriminating against "discriminating" institutions kind of goes back to two wrongs doesnt make a right.

Luckily this is a superficial sports forum so we need not delve any deeper into actual politics, sports is an escape

Not saying they don't have an anti-religion bias or even more specifically an anti-lds bias, and maybe the political amendment thing was an issue for some of the academic egg heads, but the no sunday games thing is kind of a big deal for scheduling for all of the non-football sports. Why would they deal with that and the tv network issues when they could just take the other team from the same market? Rest of the LDS market that comes with BYU is already covered in the PAC-12 footprint.

Why would Sunday games matter so much? I never watch college games on Sunday since they are all usually Saturday. I figure they can make some consideration and let the atheist liberal schools play once and a while sunday.

the Sunday issue is more of a basketbal issue and affects march Madness; no problem if BYU wants to come to BE as a football only member

Exactly. And not only march madness/conference bb tourney, but it is all of the non-tv sports as well. Baseball, softball, volleyball, etc., etc. all play on Sundays because they make swings for their road trips and try to miss as little class as possible. If you have a BYU trip your Fri-Sun weekend with 2-3 games suddenly went to Thurs-Sat or Wed-Sat. Or if you were making (what would have been) a CU/BYU weekend, CU gets stuck with the Sunday game every week because their "travel partner" won't play on Sundays.
