BSU President Bob Kustra told the state Board of Education today that a new western division of the Big East conference for football could include Southern Methodist University, the University of Houston, Boise State, and Air Force, plus two more he's not “at liberty” to name, “but I will tell you I'm very pleased about the prospects of this western division, including not only the four I mentioned but two more that would be very solid citizens in a western division like this.”

Asked by the board if it would be a “deal breaker” if the Big East didn't establish a western division, Kustra responded, “Yes, without a doubt, that is a deal breaker.” The idea would be for the western schools to play the western schools, he said

Six western schools? I count:

Air Force Falcons
Boise State Broncos
Houston Cougars
SMU Mustangs

So, if BYU is #5, who is number six, if all are western schools? Presumbably it is Louisville if they are pushed to the West, while the East is set with CT, Rutgers, Cincinnati, Navy, USF and UCF.

I imagine the UoL Cardinals much prefer the East, which includes their recruiting base in Florida. Perhaps Navy will agree to the same Western division as AFA and SMU, who they have a history with? BTW, in any case, the West looks to be tough.

UoL and UoC probably want nothing to do with the proposed BE West.

I'm thinking there won't be a PC until AFA accepts.

While an official invitation has yet to be extended, Boise State requested Thursday permission from the Idaho State Board of Education “to change conference affiliation for its intercollegiate athletics teams.” The motion passed, which will allow the athletic department to move forward with a change in conference affiliation.

In addition to Boise State, Air Force and Navy are expected to get football-only invitations from the Big East, while SMU, UCF and Houston will be on the receiving end of all sports invitations.

What is an "end of all sports invitations"

This is promising news, I wonder why there hasn't been official invites?

Ducks in proverbial row. AFA and Navy, government institutions that they are, are holding to form being slowed down by bureaucratic nonsense.

Because this involves SMU, and nothing involving SMU can be simple, logical or without turmoil, heartache, stress and aggravation. :x

Apparently no presser tomorrow. Looks like next week now...

Definitely no PC tomorrow. Might be next Tuesday. We are in but you know who is dragging their feet. God I wish this was official already.

San Diego State has applied to become a football-only member of the Big East. Their President, AD, and football coach have even openly talked about how they want to be in a Western Division of the Big East. SDSU was a bowl team last season, appears to be a bowl team this season, and has an excellent media market (SDSU gets higher TV ratings in San Diego than Pac-12 games for both football and basketball).

That's what I just said on Rivals-personally I'd just as soon have SDSU in a Western FB Division because I live beaches more than moutains and flights to San Diego are usually pretty reasonable
