SMU vs. Southern Methodist

I prefer SMU. I understand our founding name but we are a non-denominational school. Also, no one refers to tcu as texas christian. We do need a better marketing department though. There are a lot of uninformed people out there about universities, except for what they hear in the media all the time. In terms of location, a lot of people don't know where Rice is either, so that doesn't bother me. We can't be everything to everyone but we must attract the right types of candidates and grab more media attention.

USC or Southern California it is all the same.

If you are trying to appeal to the LCD it is a losing cause.

They are not the LCD for no reason.

BTW if I'm wearing any SMU and/or Southern Methodist gear 99% of the unwashed in socal do not have a clue.

One guy saw my red pony visor and asked if I was a BUFFALO BILLS fan! :lol:

Referring to athletics Southern Methodist University requests the school be mentioned as SMU, not Southern Methodist.

Personally, I don't think it matters. I believe most people that are familiar with College Football know that SMU is Southern Methodist. Similarly, when some one says USC, most people think Southern California, not South Carolina. We are the only "SMU" in NCAA D1 FBS. I don't think we're at risk to Saint Mary's University or Singapore Management University.

This thread had me concerned until I read it. I thought the Ponies were having an intra squad scrimmage, too see if they were going to the Hawaii Bowl, AF Bowl, or Ticket City Bowl.

Actually, we are playing Southern Missouri in a exhibition game for the rights to SMU. I'm fairly confident we would win...

Am I the only one who actually likes Southern Methodist? Maybe its because I am an actual Methodist but I dont think there is any reason to distance from our university's full name.

I don't think it is a big deal. I hear USC referred to as Southern Cal about 50% of the time. As long as they don't call us "Southern Meth" I don't care.

I like it too and I am an Episcopalian.
