The critics of the NCAA make fools of themselves with wildly inappropriate comparisons of different probations involving different fact scenarios. Its especially stupid when homers get on their soapbox and cry about how their own school got "screwed". Ohio St fans think they got screwed. USC fans say they got screwed-even SMU fans are ignorant enough to claim they got screwed. I think they got this one just about right. I think they got USC just about right too. I know they got the Death Penalty against SMU right. Say what you want but the NCAA has now placed 2 of the Big Boys of College Football on Bowl bans. Oregon, Miami and other are up at Bat.

Proabably won't see the "Death Penalty," since the enforcement division of the NCAA wears skirts.

I would think that you as an attorney would respect the absolute right of USC to present their best defense and not simply roll over for the NCAA.
The personal actions of one player "Number 5" and the in-actions of the "coach whose name is unmentionable" exacerbated a minor problem.
The NCAA, in their righteous indignation mode, slapped USC with the most egregious penalties since SMU. Two Years of Bowl Bans and 30 scholarships over three years is NOT even close to "just about right"!
USC has now assumed SMU's role as the new NCAA poster whipping boy since they will never impose the DP again.
Although USC may be considered a FB Big Boy they are not a Big Boy compared to the State Funded University Big Boys.
A coach blatantly lying to everyone and the number of players involved is a far more serious matter than the personal funding of a single player (Number 5) and his family for future NFL representation.
You are WRONG if you think OSU's punishment is "just about right"; however if your analysis is correct, USC should demand redress immediately for the scholarship ban to be lifted !

The Evil Empire from Indy says they don't take other cases into account when they impose sanctions. That is why none of their rulings seem to have any continuity or are totally arbitrary. Stallion says they got both situations just about right. Maybe they did, but when comparing the two situations it seems crazy that OSU got 1/2 of the post-season ban and 1/3 of the scholarship reductions. Let's look at the facts - both schools had players who received extra benefits and each school had a coach who "lied" to the NCAA. Now to be fair the USC Assistant Coach has maintained that he never lied. Ohio State cannot claim that - it is documented on how the Tressle Screwed the pooch.
In the land of common sense, one might understand comparable punishments, especially because the guilty parties were no longer with the institutions anymore. Silly me - we are talking about the NCAA.

What did or WILL Miami get is what I'm more curious about. Ohio was a first time offender, USC took a screwin but you I and everybody else knows the NCAA is a joke.... Michigan hoops didn't get the death penalty over a many years long scandal involving a booster and hundreds of thousands of dollars. Did they roll up some final 4 banners and give back a whole hell of a lot of wins and suck for 15 years afterwords, you bet they did, but they didn't get the DP. SMU got what SMU got because the NCAA had no idea that they weren't killing a team they killed the whole SWC. And look at what that left them with.
Does Nike sponsor the NCAA???? hmmmm Ohio State and more notably Oregon are Nike apparel sporters. Damaging USC only helps Oregon....... But USC is my pre season # 1 if Matt Barkley stays. I think he will.
