He'll get a few looks as a UDFA (every June Jones starter has at least signed with a team as a UDFA) but he'll never stick on a NFL roster unless he cleans up his mechanics and footwork. Might want to give Jerry Rhome a call.
They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security
JJMcD deserves a lot of kudos. We all know that he didn't have a much talent as some of the other players but he was always willing to try his best and not afraid to leave it all on the field. I wish him the best in the future.
Congrats to McDermott! He went 8-4 as a starter, took us to a bowl game and won it!!! Jones is right, McDermott is one tough guy. He played several games with a chipped bone in his foot, bruised ribs, bruised shoulder, and tendonitis in his elbow. For several weeks was too injured to even practice, but got out there on game days and gave it his all...and with great poise. According to Jones, he has an incredible grasp of the game. Wishing him a bright future! Thanks for a winning season, McDermott!!!
It's been, at times, gut wrenching watching him play. However, congrats definitely go to McDermott for this game and the other 7 wins!
Looking back over the season the only real loss I can think of that one could really put on him was the Navy one (and he played lights out against TCU which I'll take if he has to bomb against Navy ... and a win versus Navy wouldn't have done anything for us in our conference standings anyway). Would have been interesting to see what he would have done against aTm (other than the 2 early picks, we played much closer with them than the score indicated).
I don't think we would have beat Tulsa, UH, or USM with Joe Montana in his prime at quarterback this year (we came out completely flat across the board against Tulsa and USM and never got anything going against UH and with that offense they had I don't know ...).
I am happy for JJ; however the offense played without fear during the bowl game. The defense was so strong that the offense didn't worry about going three and out or turning the ball over. Defense deserves a steak dinner.
The offense's performance had nothing to do with the defense because we scored 21 of our 28 points in the first quarter. The team played outstanding on both sides of the ball, but the offense deserves credit on its own merit. For the season, the defense definitely carried the team.

McD had a tough year and deserves a lot credit for his toughness and character. Having said that, SMU would have won few games without the defense. That was the strength of the team.

Absolutely- and I hope coach Mason and his staff were given nice bonuses to reflect the performance of the D.
Another fun fact....SMU's 21 first quarter points were the most points scored in a single quarter in BBVA Compass Bowl History. Way to go, offense!!! Great job!

Great to read this. Reminds me of McDermott's high school days when he set a school, state, and national record by completing the longest touchdown pass.. 99 yards. He accomplished this feat, not once, but twice. It's been fun following him. Good luck, #15!
