Call me naive, but I still think JJ owes SMU, or maybe needs to work harder to earn his check. He SHOULD be recruiting and not vacationing. That could wait until after signing day. If he feels he is above doing his job, then I say aloha.

Yea- he's really knockin' em dead with his recruiting this year. Isn't he?? AK rapes and pillages our class, the pirate steals from us, Sumlin is doing his best to add to the dilemma and then we have JP who has yet to bring us anything. I sure hope he coaches better than he recruits.
GO PONIES!!!
I think you have your coaches mixed up, AK has signed one SMU recruit but the the old pirate has raped and pillaged the SMU cali class.

Don't forget crappy fans, crappy attendance, crappy students, crappy faculty, crappy uniforms, crappy mascots, crappy coaches. If we didn't have crappy recruiting we could have gone to six bowls in 3 years rather than just three. Crap.

Wasn't that his son that said that? When did June say that, do you have a link? Guessing not.

...and Jr. got that idea where? On the upside, with June's new dedication to SMU this talk of how crummy we are as fans will stop.
It makes sense to me.

No idea where he got the idea. Are you really saying that high school kids never have any opinions that are different than their parents'? Is it possible he heard it from his dad, sure. Just that when I see it stated as a fact I assume the person must have something to back it up. I try to give people on here credit and assume they are not just making assumptions and stating them as facts.

Not to mention offers to players like McElroy and Thomas while Hood and Collins did not even make it into school. He not our worst but he is definitely not our best. Outside of JP (since JR may not be here), I would say Derrick Odum is probably the best current recruiter.
FWIW...as of today, this is the posted roster of SMU coaches:
June Jones - Head Coach
Joe Haering - Linebackers Coach
Tom Mason - Defensive Coordinator
Dan Morrison - Assistant Head Coach/Offense
Frank Gansz, Jr. - Special Teams Coach
Bert Hill - Defensive Line Coach
Derrick Odum - Secondary Coach
Jason Phillips - Assistant Coach
Jeff Reinebold - Wide Receivers Coach
Wes Suan - Running Backs Coach
Carlos Barocio-Leon - Graduate Assistant (Offense)
Abraham Elimimian - Graduate Assistant (Defense)
Tam Hollingshead - Director of High School Relations
Randy Ross - Director Of Football Operations
Steve Stigall - Dir. of On-Campus Recruiting
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

Thanks PK. I figured this worse case scenario had not happened.

I don't think it is going to happen neither do I think that we hire Palcic.

I am paraphrasing, but three comments by June stick in my mind. 1) At a luncheon back in October I believe, he said we are now competing against AQ schools for recruits. 2) I dont believe it was the same luncheon, but in response to another recruiting question he said we have a bigger pool of recruits and should have fewer academic risks. 3) After the bowl game, he said the move to the Big East was a 'game changer' especially for recruiting.
I am trying to be optimistic, but right now all I can say is "Still waiting".
Let's hope the academic risk part is true. Do we need to go back and look at how many didn't make it or won't be around to use their full eligibility at SMU? As for the BE, we're not there yet. Hopefully our future conference affiliation will help us next year.

maybe once we start playing those BE schools, SMU can get more kids from the NE to visit and hopefully we can serve up some "Chamber of Commerce" January Dallas weather when they do. Sure sounds like Doh is excited about this prospect. I would imagine Jones and his staff might be thinking the same way.

Doh is probably excited just to keep his job (at least until the end of this season).

Re: Can a successful coach be fired for poor recruiting?
Poor recruiting will catch up to you eventually. The majority of the offense were still Bennett recruits or committs this past year and the lack of any productive receivers besides Darius is shocking after 4 years with new staff, not to mention lack of QB recruits. Defensive side has done much better but it looks like Jones has not been received well by Texas high school coaches. Line...they got lucky on him and moved him to offense to back up Shawnbrey for blocking situations and lo and behold look what happened. Line wasnt even on the Texas Football magazine two-deep going into his sophomore year!

2012 thread is kind of telling.
