My purpose in substituting Richardson for Popelka was not to denigrate Popelka, who I remember did a fine job, but to find a place for Richardson. Mike was obviously not the caliber of Dickerson at RB and prorbably not in Walker's class but as I said was one of the best all around and best game players I ever saw. And he did play in the NFL which says a lot.
Speaking of playing in the NFL I think many of us would agree that the more NFL caliber players on a college team the more likely that team is to be successful in college ball. Ron Meyer's later teams prove that point. Thinking along those lines, it seems possible to me that SMU might have as many as five NFL caliber players on the 2012 teams. As seniors that might go in the NFL draft, depending a lot on their true size, I count Margus Hunt, Taylor Reed, JaGared Davis and possibly Zach Line. Not sure if he is a senior but if Darious Johnson is a senior, he might get drafted also. If all those players were to be draft worthy and several make it in the NFL and if ( a big IF) we find a capable QB, SMU might be a surprise to a lot of opponents.

Robert Popelka was a consensus All-American. Most of the players I chose were. Its a pretty high standard to make the team when All-Americans like Rote, Dupard, Hixson and Bobby Wilson

No one has mentioned Mike Livingston at QB, I think. He played a number of years in the NFL and was probably the best athlete at QB ever at SMU.

rich - i love Reed and Davis but neither of them have any shot at the NFL - and I mean zero. They are not NFL sized LB's. DJ will have the same problem - although he has a small shot I don't see much if any NFL talent for next year in the senior class. not saying they won't do well, but Hunt is about it for the next level.

I was concerned about the true size of Reed and Davis. I know the roster sizes are often exaggerated. I do believe that Hunt has a chance and possibly Line.

Lot of greats on the d-line, this is before my time, but would Louie Kelcher be in the hunt?

he's on my list w/o question. Two of the greatest games by an SMU NG that I saw were Kelcher's 24 or so tackles against Texas A&M and a dominating performance in Fayettville to break about an 15 game losing streak to the Hogs.

I would also consider (ahem) Mr. Craig James as a candidate for punter....

Craig was a damn good line drive punter but I Morestead has one of the biggest legs I've seen in College Football. Height, hang time PLUS accuracy-James can't really compare based upon what college and NFL scouts look for

it says something that i can't find a spot for one of my all-time favorite players, gary hammond. a great all-around player-qb, rb and wr. probably could have played db as well.

Quite the athlete from PA Jefferson. Sat next to him at a Three Dog Night concert at the Cotton Bowl.
