Yeah, it definitely seemed like Kyle felt he wasn't going to be starting regardless of who was on the roster with him. There didn't seem to be any love lost between the two of them, which is a shame, because if Padron had continued to develop, he could have been a very competent ball tosser for us this year, regardless of whether Gilbert pans out.

With regard to Gilbert, I'm fairly confident that he'll start. At first I was hesitant, because of how complicated the system is reported to be. But then on the other hand, Jones has shown no hesitation with starting true freshmen out there, so I can't imagine he'll be slow to put a transfer Junior on the field.

Jones gave Kyle every opportunity to be successful but Kyle let Jones down and made him look bad. Kyle had most all the tools but he is still missing brain speed and decision making. I wish him the best but look forward to an aggressive and confident Gilbert.

It seems to me with Zach Line and a mobile Gilbert the passing game opens up big time and we average forty points a game.

Gilbert's obviously an X factor, but I have a feeling he'll do well here. The o-line is concern. Pretty thin and losing Reich (at least for part of the season) is extremely unhelpful. That being said, I think the general talent level of the younger O-linemen that we're getting is better than what we've had. So if they can develop quickly it should be OK. If not, it'll be a disaster.

As for our opponents, the talent gap with A&M makes it very unlikely we win that game. RGIII is gone, but Baylor's bringing back some talent and Seastrunk will be a feature back for them this year. So that's another tough one. If I were a gambling man, I wouldn't put my money on the Mustangs to beat a very talented, very motivated, and very angry TCU squad. . . Although anything can happen in a rivalry game.

Those three games aside, I like the Mustangs against everyone else on the schedule. But there will undoubtedly be one winnable game where we take a dump. So I'll go with 8-4 regular season, a win in the conference championship game, and a bowl win = 10-4.

This is like the day pitchers and catchers report for spring training. Hope, crazy wild hope. Pie in the sky type of irrational thinking.

SMU 14-0

The panic and fear will creep in as the season approaches, today hope springs eternal. We are going undefeated and a BCS Bowl game. As the season comes into focus I will allow hope mingle with trepidation and have a different valuation on the season. But today! Today! We are on the cusp of a national championship.

I think we win one of the big OOC games, simply because I think our D will be outstanding next year and one of those three teams will be out of sync. I predict we win C-USA and our bowl, and 11 games total.

Then we sit back and watch Margus Hunt be drafted in the first 5 picks after a season of subjecting opposing QB's to more star-gazing than Galileo.

JonesDoe, you are clueless buddy. The kid had the skills, but just didn't thrive under Jones. Jones jerked him out too early in the season and knew he made a mistake. Sorry to see a great kid like Kyle leave the team, but I wish him well. He'll thrive this year and for years to come. You on the other hand...

To all sun-shiners,

Do yourselves a favor and join us here in reality. Our program is in no position to make runs at the top 25. Just appreciate these 8-5 seasons that end with bowl appearances. I am just a little too young to have the Pony Express days installed within my sports consciousness, so I guess that is easy for me to say...

Baylor - Loss (Our passing game is going to look like hell)
SFA - Win
A&M - Loss (But we will see improvement in some areas)
TCU - Win (Thanks to will power)
UTEP - Win
Tulane - Win
Houston - Win (Can we PLEASE just beat these guys already...?...THANK YOU!!!)
Memphis - Win
UCF - Loss
Southern Miss - Loss
Rice - Win (Let's not make this one interesting like we did last year, please)
Tulsa - Win (Playing at home is nicer than playing on the road)

Best case scenario: 8-4

Worst case scenario: 5-7

Most likely scenario: 7-5

The "skillet" stays in Dallas for a 2nd consecutive year.

With the questions we have after graduating a solid senior class, especially at quarterback and on the offensive line, I'm going to predict 6-6 in 2012.

Padron certainly had the physical skills, but his processing speed was slow. AND he got in coach's doghouse and couldn't get out. I don't think his dad helped and may have contributed to June closing practices to everyone including the media (last bit is pure speculation on my part).

JJ, when he wasn't beat to crap, may have been a better QB (reference game vs. TCU last year and game vs. Tulane 2 years ago when Padron got yanked and JJ started pickeing them apart).

I think we all get a bit deluded over Padron because he looked like Dan Marino in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl.

But even with all that, Padron clearly had better upside, and I'd feel a lot better about next year if we had him around. Without Padron and a veteran OL in front of Line, next year's offense is a crapshoot.

The D should be improved with the emergence of Margus, who was phenomenal in the Compass Bowl. We have the best LB corps in the conference. Our 2nd team is probably the 2nd best LB corps in the conference. And we're deeper and more athletic in the backfield than we've been.

Still, the questions on O make this one too tough to call.

tough to say until we see how healthy we are coming into the season and how quickly Gilbert adjusts to this offense. Running game needs to be strong and if Zach comes back healthy, we should have a very capable stable of RBs to help take some pressure off a young OL and new QB. I agree the D should be OK. We just need to go at least 2-2 in the non-conference before we start talking about competing for the CUSA title.

6-6. Linebackers will lead the way, but there will be days when the defense will have to cover for the offense.

Agreed. Anything more than that this year will be gravy. The test for this team will be if our offense is markedly improved by mid-season.
