I'd be ok with keeping June around another season if he overhauls the coaching staff. I think he is still an effective coach and can make us a winner in the Big East, but he is no magician. He needs players, just like any coach does and his current assistants are not getting it done on the recruiting trail. I do not know enough to determine whether it is a lack of effort or ineptitude, but the fact is we are not signing the type of players needed to improve our record. If we had a capable backup QB last season and right now, we probably win CUSA. As it stands a bowl game is highly doubtful right now and that is completely unacceptable. We should get to the point where we make a bowl game every season and a a major bowl game once every 4-5 years (major is not limited to BCS games).

You really trust June to overhaul the coaching staff? He'd just bring in more of his recruiting-allergic buddies.

On his own, probably not. But, this could be a way for Hart to exert some influence without canning JJ and having to pay his salary while he is on Waikiki. I don't know how assistants' contracts are structured, but they might be able to be re-worked to put some performance incentives in place with regard to recruiting effort and other measurables in terms of player development. The assistants might be the easiest source of leverage for a new AD trying to make his mark without too much noise. Just two cents from someone who doesn't know what the heck he is talking about!

If our AD is worth his mettle he will not have a choice!

I honestly have no idea how you can possibly believe this. There is absolutely nothing in his stay here at SMU that says he is an effective coach and stepping up in competition, can make us a winner. Nothing.

except for his win over a Big East team in the bowl game last year, of course.

A team that isn't even going to be in the conference next year, of course. One that ended last season with a losing record and such.

When the QB has performed well, we've had reason for optimism. i.e. Padron at the Hawaii Bowl, McDermott at TCU, at BBVA Compass Bowl, etc. I think that if Gilbert, Preston, or someone else were able to successfully run the offense we would be singing a completely different tune. As it stands, we don't have an effective QB are 2-4 and lost to the worst team in FBS last week. Give me better recruits and I will be happy. He has won 3 years in a row with Bennett's players, and Bennett was no ace recruiter for us. It all comes down to recruiting. We lost the games we lost in the off-season, not because he was out-coached.

I was very happy with that win, but Pitt was undergoing a lot of changes, including not having a full-time HC. Having said that, I though we came to play that day. Those are the exceptions, and that is not acceptable. Look at Pitt this year, and I think you'll be very hard pressed to believe we can beat or even compete against them this year. Again, that is unacceptable, and the responsibility as the HC lies sorely on Jones.

Give the players way more credit than that - they aren't fools.
The team
IS over it. I don't know anyone directly but some of the sons of my wife's bridge club members who work for a major metropolitan company have
best friends (forever) on the team and you can believe ME (I heard it indirectly from over 3 people and overheard 2 conversations at Goff's), it is over and done with - water under the bridge. Give the players credit - they aren't interested in all that soap opera bs.
Well, I my wife's friend's sister has a freind whose brother knows a contractor (very successfull, BTW) who met a guy at the supermartket whose nephew works out with a guy whose best freind is on the team, and hear me now und believe me later, the players do not care. How can I not believe that.
Move on nothing to see here, na na na, I can't hear you.

While the Pitt win was nice even with all their problems, we only scored 7 points after the first quarter! Sign of things to come.

And then he got double crossed by ASU, who reneged on a clear promise. And then, after all he's done here, some SMU "fans" get selective amnesia as to who saved this program from extinction. The team is over it. Time you do so too.
I speak for a number of posters when I have posted in the past that it appears that JJ lost his interest and focus in SMU after the ASU fiasco.
I used to think that too until I went to the Larry Brown press conference and Brown spoke at length about how grateful he was to Jones for his support (June called him daily, I believe), encouraged him to "hang in there" during the search process and sold Brown on what a great place SMU is. To me, that doesn't sound like someone who has lost interest in SMU. So while I acknowledge the less than ideal sequence of events, I've jumped back on the June Jones bandwagon.
I'm not saying June is perfect or anything remotely close to it. For example, considering his track record I'm still scratching my head over why we haven't been able to recruit some marquee WRs and an elite QB. But the team has been gutted by injury, kids who couldn't make the grade and [deleted] poor performance from admissions (What, for example, would our offensive line look like this year if we had Darryl Jackson and Stavion Lowe in the lineup?). So there's plenty of blame to go around, and only a portion of is lies at June's feet IMHO.

Stavion Lowe hasn't gotten into the lineup because of Stavion Lowe................

Some of you refer back to JJMcD as if he was a gosh-darn Doug Flutie...he sucked too. June hasn't developed a single QB that can fully run his masterpiece offense.
