I was in the "scout" press box (you know, the little one that is always on the visitors side at older stadiums) at the Denison HS stadium (WPA, by the way) the first or second year of the Ron Meyer regime. You had to climb a wooden ladder and come up through a hole in the floor and lift yourself into the small, 16 x 4 ish plywood press box. It was raining like crazy and the ground was muddy down below. As the game was being played, seemingly out of nowhere, Ron Meyer lifted himself through the floor and stood there in a white suit, navy vest, blue shirt and red and blue tie. Always had an "I.D." bracelet and a ring or two. He looked like Mr. Clean amongst some bluejean clad 9th grade coaches sent to scout the game. Introduced himself to everyone... don't even remember who he was there to see... but he wasn't concerned about getting wet or dirty. Nobody could believe Ron Meyer was in our midst. Remember those WILD Vegas-style, polyester, diamond print coaching slacks the staff wore? He was definitely a stepper.

were they playing Sherman-he actually got a commitment from the No. 1 recruit in the Country-DE Billy Don Jackson from Sherman. Signed the old SWC Letter of Intent but we lost him on National Signing Date to UCLA.

Great story. Thanks for sharing. I literally laughed out loud at the vision of Meyer from your story. He was one of a kind.

Re: Things Ron Meyer never said
While we were standing in the airport in Little Rock, seeing Ron off after had visited us for an SMU Alumni meeting, he remarked that he had signed a little QB from Highland Park that he would have to convert to a defensieve back or something because he wasn't good enough for an SMU QB. He had signed him because all the HP people insisted on it. That guy was, of course, Lance McElhaney.
