Bring some earplugs or sit in the stadium club with the blue hairs, no need to rant about this.

At least the video people and the band should should be on the same page so they are not both playing at the same time

I want a college football experience, not a rap concert. Playing over the Mustang Band is disrespectful. If JJ and the SMU administration don't want the band then say so. They give away puny scholarships to band members. Mustang Band members put in more time and stay longer to watch whatever product SMU football puts on the field, more than anyone on this board and administration.
Everyone gets pissy when the opposing band plays over our band but its ok for the SMU administration to play over our band? That BS.

I'm old, but I'm not TOO old and yes, the recorded music is TOO loud in some spots of the stadium.

Because all the noise seems to be coming from the scoreboard, instead from the speakers around the stadium, the sound moves directionally to certain sections. Nobody wants elevator music, but if you can't hear the person shouting next to you, it's too dang loud.

Several people around me - of various ages - agreed the music was too loud. There's a difference in volume levels from energizing to annoying, and where we were sitting (upper level, north half on the home side) it crossed over into annoying. If you were sitting lower, the volume might not have been so bad.

I'm all for cranking up some tunes to get the crowd and the team geeked up, but pick your spots. It shouldn't be constant and it shouldn't play over the Mustang Band. It's still a college football game and marching bands give it a college feel.

Another sign of the apocalypse.

I prefer to sit with 'real fans' (in the stands), not behind windows. Although ear plugs may be a good idea. Thanks. Maybe I should wear my camo and bring a shotgun, too. ;)

For all you band lovers, tell them to play up to date music like every other college band in America. I will rant about that, b/c they don't play anything interesting to me. I think plenty others agree - especially in Moody when there is nothing else happening. Old Jazz standards are not interesting at a football or bball game. Does nothing to fire anyone up.
Beans is about the only thing that gets anyone going and they need another variation of that. Thanks!

Believe they played a Black Eyed Peas song a couple of years ago. Also remember an Usher song and some Bollywood music.

The band really doesn't play that much "old Jazz" anymore. If anything, they play a good amount of classic rock. Your theory that that is all that they play simply shows that you aren't paying that much attention

a couple of years ago?? - I pay attention but you can hardly ever hear them from the home side b/c they are tiny. And yes I donate to the band. A lot of room for improvement. At Moody, it's just plain annoying.

1. Music selection was much improved for the most part. Gangham style led to many great shots of the stands with people dancing and having a good time. Much better than the kiss cam from years gone by.

2. There were two instances where they were still playing either "helmet game" or an ad and the volume was not decreased until the play was several seconds old.

3. Biggest complaint for me was during 3rd quarter when Haness got hurt and was down on the field. Somehow, we felt that some elevator music was appropriate to play while he was down on the field.

Overall improved from last year, but still room for improvement.

Marching bands are becoming obsolete anyway. Their original goal of being entertaining is now seldom met in a meaningful way by any band. It just can't compare to modern music through the sound system.

The only advantage of a live band is simply being live. I propose we try morphing the band into a, or a collection of, modern music acts.

Set up a solid rock setup with one o several bass, guitar, drums, singer. Also setup a DJ or two for various rap and electronica.

Perhaps combine them in one versatile group.

I haven't been to that many games in the past couple of years (due to living in a different region of the country) so I am going off of what I have heard in a small sample size within the last 1-2 years. And yes, they are small, but they are loud (usually they are louder than the larger visiting bands). At most schools they "enhance" the band's sound with microphones - including at Texas, Alabama, etc. Don't think they do that at SMU

Regarding what actually gets played at Moody, from what I have seen the band is usually not able to play much at all because of the other things going on at timeouts. The PA has to read those ads in the timeouts (or the ads play on the scoreboard screen) so the band gets 20 seconds...so they start on a song and then the ball is put in play so they have to stop.

Standard timeout sequence at Moody:

Peruna (once)
"I think this is going to be a win win. A win win. You know what this is? A win win? Home run. American Airlines, we know why you fly."
"SMU would like to thank Clipper Magazine. Clipper Magazine, the best local advertising in America, period."
"Public Service Plumbers. (unintelligible - sounds like the rest of the ad was recorded underwater)."
First 15 seconds of "25 or 6 to 4"
Ball put in play
