I can't remember ever seeing visiting team bands play while down on the field waiting to start half time and all of them leave the stands about half way through the 2nd quarter to prepare for half time activities...just like the Mustang band. Since the visiting band plays first, the M band has a little extra time to get changed and down onto the field.malonish wrote:The change of pants goes along with being the Best Dressed. I don't think anyone would like them changing pants in the stands. I didn't want anyone seeing my polka dotted boxers(says the guy with no shirt in his avatar). It also takes a big man to admit when he's wrong. We were never given the go to play on the sideline so I assumed we weren't able to.

Re: Of note to Mustang Band interested folks
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
Re: Of note to Mustang Band interested folks
We have a couple of old guys that can really rip it. I'm probably the youngest active with one other person from my year. I'm trying to get people more active like one guy who was our best guy but is just meh about it. I will say that from day one I tried to get my knees at 90 degrees and tried up to the BBVA bowl last year when I substituted for a spot. I had to try and make it look good since I'm not the best player aroundcouch 'em wrote:You'll find no greater defender of traditions than myself but if they are counter to the purpose of the band they should be changed.
As much as I enjoy the alumni band, if the school cannot provide a facility to change pants close enough to allow changing in shifts, then shirts and pants should not be changed, only coat/vest/tie etc.
Even hanging in 2 groups would suffice - the alumni band looks less than half the size of the student band and is full of olds, but do the job about as good from a average joe fan point of view.

True. At times like that there is more time but they are generally down in time to watch the whole visitor show.PK wrote:I can't remember ever seeing visiting team bands play while down on the field waiting to start half time and all of them leave the stands about half way through the 2nd quarter to prepare for half time activities...just like the Mustang band. The band is probably half the size it should be. Baylor, TCU, etc. are all marching well over 100.
Then again, in this YouTube clip, it wasn't much bigger in 1960 but had a much crisper march than seen in recent years.

I am assuming you meant crisp to mean fast because in that vid the lines aren't too good. The more recent years have had better front to back alignment with some exceptions *shakes fist at trumpets*DFW HOYA wrote:The band is probably half the size it should be. Agreed.malonish wrote: I am assuming you meant crisp to mean fast because in that vid the lines aren't too good. A reason for that is that both schools require their music ed majors to be in the Marching Band. That gets them a good chunk of their band before the non music ed majors and the average students get into the mix. Music Ed isn't a very big program at SMU, mostly because Meadows is a conservatory. So even if we did require music ed majors to participate, it wouldn't make that much of a difference.
As for the crispness of the marching, I'm with you. The big difference is that the high knee lift hasn't been taught correctly for the past few years. I put that on the Director but that's just my opinion.

My opinion on this video is that the knees don't look high to me, you can't point to that video and go "The knees!" If there's a better knee example in a video then I would accept that.
You can read above that I tried my best to knee lift all the way even to the point of exhaustion on my first day. It gets harder the faster you go and that band was very fast.

The band quit wearing white spats this season to avoid drawing attention to their lack of disciplined marching. We do not have the traditional Mustang Band classic, classy look. Borderline ghetto, I'd say.malonish wrote:Peruna_Ate_My_Rolex wrote:DFW HOYA wrote:The band is probably half the size it should be. Baylor, TCU, etc. are all marching well over 100.

Put a "swoosh" on the spats - heck, you can put a swoosh on anything. Free/donated doesn't mean "better". They paid a price in a downgraded look. Thanks for the compliment, though.

I myself like the spats but from being in the band I also like free stuffBergermeister wrote:Put a "swoosh" on the spats - heck, you can put a swoosh on anything. Free/donated doesn't mean "better". They paid a price in a downgraded look. Thanks for the compliment, though.

The missing spats does mess with an alternate lyric version of Peruna that we won't go into here.

I don't mind the no spats but tennis shoes look funny with coat and tie. Not to mention black shoes with blue pants that light. Need someone to sponsor some browns

Could there be some couch'em logo pants/shoes in the wardrobe soon? I'm sure Al Bundy on the rear of the pants would be funny.couch 'em wrote:I don't mind the no spats but tennis shoes look funny with coat and tie.
