Well, unless there are some really bizarre occurrences, we sure as Hades will not make a BSC bowl this year. And one would seriously doubt, even if we could get the ghost of Bear Bryant to take the job, we could make one next year.

Realistically we are not there or even close to there.

And even BSC buster Hawaii took 10 years to build.

Yet, we are to fire the one guy that took us from cellar dweller perennial Bottom 10 loser to consistent post season contentions in five years or less. Consistent! That is real tangible progress. It isn’t BSC level, but a marked improvement.

Is satisfaction struggling against the Tulane’s and Rice’s of the world to make an entry level bowl the ultimate goal? NO! I understand the desire to be better now. I understand the desire to show what appears to be ever improving teams.

Is getting stomped by Top 10 teams like A$M (this year) & TCU (2 years ago) the best we can do? For now, unfortunately, yes. We don’t have the talent. And how many 4 or 5 stars have considered SMU since the DP? Since Jones?

Meyer took 5 years to build a winner. Not a bowl contender but a winner. Jones took the worse team in college football form the hell hole we wallowed inn for two decades to a bowl winner (and overall winner) in two years.

Building a sustainable winner and moving into the elite level of college football takes time. We can’t buy a winner like the good old days ( I mean we could and I am all for it and will do my part but I don't think we will).

Since a BSC bowl is out, since the conference championship is not directly in our hands, then playing for a great bowl trip for the players (seems they are the ones most likely to benefit from the bowl experience) isn’t a bad goal. And Hawaii is a great placed to go!

After the season, those that make decision s will address how best to move forward. I would love to be a part of that process but I have even less a chance of that then this team making a BSSC bowl this year. So I will pull for our team and hope they get the best bowl for the players they can and be thankful we are not in the shape we were a mere 6 years ago.

I love winning, man. It's like better than losing.

That's my question: "What's a reasonable expectation for SMU football?" While some folks are happy where we are, others seem to think we should be regular participants in BCS bowls.
Mustangs35SMU wrote:We haven't even made it three games into a season under June without a loss. We haven't even been able to compete with a middle of the pack BCS program outside of one game vs Texas Tech, and we were still down considerably in that game before we came back.
That's partially a function of scheduling, but the bigger issue is talent level.

How about first getting the support of SMU alums and students? How can we expect Dallas to support the team if we won't fully support it?

With additional work, I can see SMU at the 8-4/9-3 level in the BE. Not a guarantee of a conference championship game but a fair shot at one. Anything beyond that would require incredible breaks in recruiting, star aligning, etc. I don't see many 4*/5* players lining up to attend schools that draw 16K.

4 and 5 star won't walk in the door. You have to go out and get them. Who on the staff even gets a shot to be considered by any 4* players.

We had 30k against ATM and blew a tire. We had the visitor section filled at Baylor and we stunk so bad people left by the third quarter. At some point we need to compete.
