I tried for Doak too, but the wife (Florida alum) wouldn't buy it.

No way my wife would go for naming one of our boys Doak so all our dogs have been Doak. Couldn't use Kyle because we have a nephew with that one, but I did hope to try to persuade her to go with Meredith if we had a girl. I recall seeing someone named Doak Walker Welles played football in Texas back in the late 70s early 80s.

My dad was an SMU man through-and-through. He played ball there in the 1950s and worked for the athletic department in the early 1970s. We lived in the Houston area but had SMU season tickets and went to as many games as we could. Dad was happy that Houston joined the SWC because that meant the Mustangs would make a trip to the Bayou City for football every year.

Ha! my son's middle name is Walker too. Nobody had the pull to get Doak on the Birth Certificate

My father registered here with this username back in 2000. After he passed on, I decided to keep it active. I didn't go to SMU but he did and my brothers and I grew up fierce Mustang fans.

I appreciate this site a great deal.

That's a really cool story. I'm so sorry to hear about your dad passing, but I'm equally glad you're on here and carrying on his legacy as a PonyFan. Welcome!

Funny. What is so bad about the name Doak that our wives could not at least let us have it as a middle name. If it was good enough for Ewell's wife it should have been for us.

Rayburn, thanks for the stories about your Dad. Unfortunately my dad is an aggie and I only get ATM stories, though he was in school in the Doak Walker days.

My dad had a story that cant be confirmed where Doak got injured against ATM when he ran into an aggie band member. He told the story at his ATM club and one of the members knew Zohn Milam and gave my dad his number. My Dad actually called him. While Mr Milam could not actually remember if that was the reason Doak got hurt, they had a nice chat about 40s SWC football.

Story from my dad was Doak was injured running into a person in a wheelchair on the sideline due to the overflow crowd.

Sleepy Morgan always called me the "Doaker" because my practice jersey was #37 and I was a running back on the scout team when the frosh defense (playing offense) practiced against the first team offense.

That's right. It's been a while. I left MM and came here, which was the "sunshine board." When MM failed all of the rest of you came over here. Thanks for the correction.

Same here. Tried to name my first son Doak and the wife balked.

There's a kid here in my neighborhood who is Doak's great grandson I believe. His name is Doak Walker.
