I thought I saw somewhere that the NIU win bumped OU from the BCS, and after all the dominoes fell from that, Iowa State ended up taking the Liberty Bowl spot that LaTech was hoping for (or told, unless something crazy happens, we got you guys playing here in Memphis...). So while they were holding and waiting for their Liberty Bowl invite, the independence bowl invite deadline had passed. Whoops.
