Re: I was just poking fun at your use of the larger, more impressive round trip number rather than the (to me) more intuitive one way.

Reading some of the PF posts about the band you'd almost think they're martyrs slaving away for our benefit. I don't disagree a bit that the band puts in long hours, but it seems that they're just one of many student organizations/teams who do that in order to represent our alma mater. More importantly, they do it because they enjoy it. Maybe I'm missing something, but at times the beatification of the band on here seems silly when the implication is that other involved folks at SMU aren't as dedicated.[/quote]

Yep, you are missing something, a lot of something. OK, try to name another group that does anything like the band. What have you done? Try giving up a weekend to travel on a bus to support the team. Not exactly fun time.

That's because a sizable portion of posters are band alumni, and thus the band is a high priority.

It should be noted that the % of posters is wild out proportion to the % of alumni so maybe they do deserve special treatment.

I am not a band alumni, just appreciative. You are obviously not.

A 737-700 or -800 can easily make Hawaii...Alaska does this 25 times a week!

NY Pony wrote:Just assuming, but I would guess that the team would be on an etops certified 737. This would reduce the cost of the charter. The team needs to be there for about a week. The band, it seems according to these reports, is flying commercial, so my guess is this is being done to save money on hotels by only having them there for a few nights.

ETOPS certified 737 :?: I hope the hudson landing guy is flying, and they have a bunch of boats
ready to pick them outta da water :!:

The 777 had a hard time getting an ETOPS rating.

A friend of mine is a 737 pilot, he was not real crazy about a 737 flying to Hawaii.

The Mustang Band is not infallible, nor is it prohibited from being criticized. You are not walking on sacred ground to say things about the group when something is wrong or when the group represents themselves poorly. That being said, the band rarely asks for anything in return from the football team, the coaches, the fans, the administration, and so on. It is a group that gives much for little recognition. Yes, the members are there because they choose to be, and thank goodness for continuing interest in keeping the long-standing tradition alive. Would it be nice for a coach or player or somebody showing a little love for all of the support, even on a small scale? - of course. But is it necessary? - no. There are obviously other groups (cheer, pom, handlers) that work hard for the school with hours of practice and dedication. I applaud those groups, but they, also, are not above criticism.

And yes, I am one of the many band alumni on here that supports the program/school with attendance and donations.

Why have multiple posters responded to me as though I am criticizing? I pointed out

1. Many posters were in the band,so they value it - that's not a criticism
2. Band alumni are fans at a much higher rate than the general smu population - a compliment

With respect to the comments by lwjr, PlanoStang, Swag and perhaps others, when all is said and done a B-757 and a B-737 have the same number of engines and if both have the same ETOPS rating such as ETOPS-120 or ETOPS-180 they meet the same minimum requirement. Some may exceed it. So does a B-767 or B-777 for that matter and I suppose various AiRBUS models.

Really though, I imagine the availability of one or more suitable aircraft during a time of high travel is the problem.

I hope the band gets to go but if the numbers have to be limited I'd send the seniors first.
