As far as I'm concerned, MWC hung SMU out to dry when then spun off from the WAC. They didn't have any concern for us when they broke up the 16 team WAC. They took the "good teams" at the time and left us with Hawaii and San Jose State. We were fortunate to find a new eastern facing home in CUSA. Even nBE/CUSA 3.0 would ultimately be better for the university with the eastern exposure than having 10PM EST kickoff times for away games.

so I gather you don't like the idea of us deserting our longtime conference mate Rice? Or Tulsa for that matter? I think we've been conference mates with Tulsa longer than any association we had with those WAC schools

While it would be nice to have stability, not sure when that opportunity will be available in today's world

Not to sound hypocritical, but leaving for another conference is not quite as bad as splitting off from half of your conference to form another conference simply without some of the schools in your previous conference.

Same can be said for SWC/B12, but we'd go back in a heartbeat.

what the MWC group did was cold, but can't be too sensitive these days and certaily not wise to hold grudges

I don't hold grudges, just saying that it is worth noting to those that talk about the stability of the Mountain West Conference. The truth is that it is "stable" because no one wants those teams. When they had Utah, BYU, and TCU it was not necessarily stable. Right now, Cincinnati, USF, and UCONN are the strongest teams and I think we need to stick with them as long as we can.

The MWC lost all but one marquee team (AFA). BYU left. Utah left. It now still has late addition Boise who wanted to leave with SDS. So, now they have nothing to speak of. And they made their own bed and now are stuck with in essence the WAC that they started with except without their name brands. All this shuffling has changed nothing except for two teams. Utah and TCU moved up, the rest are still in the same lower tier they were in to begin with and two teams got demoted. UConn and Temple which were never the best teams in the BE.
