And given that criteria, June does not qualify.
The last 4 seasons he does.
The last SMU coach who has a better record overall without being put on NCAA probation is
Matty Bell from the 40s.
Madison "Matty" Bell 1945–1949 32-16-5
Harvey “Rusty” Russell 1950–1952 13-15-2
Chalmer “Woody” Woodard 1953–1956 19-20-1
William "Bill" Meek 1957–1961 17-29-4
Hayden Fry 1962–1972 49-66-1
Dave Smith 1973–1975 16-15-2 NCAA probation pay for play
Ron Meyer 1976–1981 34-32-1 NCAA probation pay for play
Bobby Collins 1982–1986 43-14-1 NCAA death penalty a payroll to meet
Forrest Gregg 1989–1990 3-19-0
Tom Rossley 1991–1996 15-48-3
Mike Cavan 1997–2001 22-34-0
Phil Bennett 2002–2007 18-52-0
June Jones 2008–Present 32-37-0
What are the odds that SUPERCOACH exists, and why would he want to come to SMU
Probably less than the GREAT PUMPKIN from Peanuts."
PONYKRIS89 comment to add...This shows that the only way to win at SMU is to cheat like every other school.
Just don't do it again after NCAA told ya that DP is in your future if it continues.
I am all for bending the rules to the same level as everyone else, but your comparison is silly. Thise other coaches had a much harder schedule.
Not silly, the #'s and correlation with probation bear that out..
But, I would agree, with SMU schedule recently, bending the rules has not been required and what we have is a program that is teetering at .500.
Just saying the next coach doesn't have to be a choir boy.

PlanoStang wrote:"Thise other coaches had a much harder schedule." Not so much. You consider the SWC back in those days were full of Rices, TCUs, Baylors, TTs
A&Ms who were all bottomfeeders at one time or another. Texas even sucked before DKR

Old SWC did not have multiple teams lose to D1AA like the AAC. They also did not have UTEP's or Tulsane's to beat up on. I believe any decent coach given the low recruiting restriction that JJ has had would have done well at SMU. JJ mostly beat up on sub .500 teams to get where he is. Apples and oranges in the flexibility JJ has been given.

Most definitely a PIPEDREAM. But if the Steelers keep staying winless, and the Rooney family decides to make a mid-season change. Wouldn't mind Mike Tomlin. Although, my perception sees Mike as an NFL "lifer." Mike will probably take the Washington Redskins job, after "lil Danny" chitcans Mike Shanahan

Yeah, but the Rooney family have always been committed to their coaches, through thick and thin.

Careful....I remember a few seasons of Tulane, UTEP and UT-Arlingstons on SMU schedule back in the early 80's. Just saying.

Bill Cowher has a lot of emotion. But he is over 50 will no Texas ties, so he does not qualify.
However he may be coaching Aldrick Robinson and LeRibeus soon...

Talking about the SWC as a whole on a yearly basis. Recruiting restriction were a lot tougher on SMU then as well. Only June has been put in the position to succeed.

Ken Whisenhunt
He has Philip Rivers playing to form again as the POKES can attest from yesterday.
He also took the lame Cardinals to the Super Bowl with an alleged washed up QB.
He also benched Matt Leinast for which all of Football is eternally grateful.
Don't know if he wants to jump to the College game but it worked for
THE COACH WHOSE NAME IS UNMENTIONABLE who is now back in the NFL making BIG COIN.
The more I think about him the more I like him for my TROJANS!
SMU - IT"S YOUR TURN FIRE JUNE JONES

I'm not a Mc Fatterson fan, but he lit up the frogs at halftime and they came out
and tore us a new one after that, we need a coach with some fire.

That one that is willing to go after at least mid to lower tier BCS level players.

I graduated pre DP so I am pretty old as well but not a shill. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.
