SMU is the better job for him, and you can take that to the bank. I will laugh at all when this becomes fact.

I think the doc has it right - and I would only say this about a couple of spots - but Wake is in a really tough spot as far as improvement. Of course - they will just sit there and get thrashed and count their money like TCU will, but as far as a stepping stone for Morris personally I think he can do more with us as a launch pad then with Wake.

SMU --- > Texas A&M. That's what the guy is going to do.gostangs wrote:I think the doc has it right - and I would only say this about a couple of spots - but Wake is in a really tough spot as far as improvement. While Ole Miss is a flagship school, nobody ever seems to be able to get everything together for more than 1-2 "decent" seasons.East Coast Mustang wrote:Disagree about Ole Miss- it's the flagship institution in the middle of a recruiting hotbed. I would add Vandy, Washington State, Boston College, and probably Syracuse to your list right now. Of course, I also would have added Baylor three years ago.Digetydog wrote:On the way up the coaching ladder, I would rather be coach of a strong (or potentially strong) team in a weak conference than a weak (and likely to continue to be weak) program in a bigger conference.East Coast Mustang wrote:Thinking about this in light of the reported interest of Wake Forest in Chad Morris and that hail mary internet rumor that we are interested in him.
Being in the ACC, I think there's a national assumption that Wake is the better job. But neither is a destination job- and if you're looking to get the next rung up on the coaching ladder- where can you recruit easier and (hopefully) win faster- Wake or SMU? At Wake you've got to compete in a conference with FSU, Miami, Virginia Tech, Clemson, while at SMU you've got great facilities (relative to the rest of the conference) in a great state for recruiting and can (theoretically) compete with anyone in the American. The pay is about the same- I think Grobe was making $2.3M a year at Wake.
I always thought Morris would have better P5 offers after this season and we wouldn't have a prayer. But if Wake is the main competition for his services then we could be in better shape than we think, IF RGT, Hart, and the CoC see the light and cut ties with June this month. Chad Morris would be an absolutely amazing hire for us, but I'm not holding my breath.
Jobs that I would avoid like the plague:
1) Kentucky (and probably Ole Miss)
2) Wake Forest and Duke
3) Indiana
4) Kansas
In addition, I would avoid Uconn because there are no recruits in this state (or area). They are a bad program in a weak conference with little hope of improving. Even when there are gifted players, they are unlikely to get good coaching. For example, one of the local HS teams is in the state quarterfinals using the Single Wing offense. I don't think that there is a single team in this this state that could win district in any Texas division higher than 2A.

Big 12 Schools:
- One Briles leaves, I think Baylor goes back on the list.
- I think TCU (even if Faterson stays) is likely to be on the list soon. In the sWc days, they were almost always a doormat. Now that they are in a Big Boy conference, I suspect their years of winning may be over. Are they really going to be able to go head to head with UT, TT, OU, & OSU year after year?

You might be right about BU after Briles leaves. And about TCU- I don't see them being competitive in the top tier of the Big 12 anytime soon- look at their current recruiting class. The only 4 star is apparently taking visits to A&M and Oregon
And you're right about Ole Miss is the past, but anything can happen. 20 years ago Oregon was considered a ho-hum job. Big public schools in recruiting rich areas are always sleeping giants

ACC vs AAC, that is all you need to know. As Duke has shown, you can make waves in the ACC, b/c it's pretty much crap other than Florida State typically.

Disagree giddyup- tough for a school like Wake to compete with Clemson, Miami, VT, etc. year in and year out. Yeah, you can maybe catch lightning in a bottle one season like Duke has or Wake in '06 but you could also get your [deleted] whipped week in and week out

I'm hoping Morris comes to SMU and uses us to eventually succeed Sumlin at A&M. Would love for SMU to become a "springboard" destination for quality/hungry football coaches

If you're going to stay for 15 years and build a program, maybe. But Morris is one of the up-and-coming coaches in the game and could have a high profile job very soon.GiddyUp wrote:Agree to disagree - much better job than smuEast Coast Mustang wrote:Disagree giddyup- tough for a school like Wake to compete with Clemson, Miami, VT, etc. year in and year out. If you're him and you're looking to win fast and build up your coaching resume, where do you think it's easier to do that- Wake or SMU?
